CU Boulder

Realised that as soon as I hit submit. I keep doing that! (but I still don't get why it's CU Boulder but University of Colorado Boulder)

Went there for grad school. The thought is that since it’s in PAC 12 with UC Berkeley, CU Boulder makes more sense. At least that’s what I was once told.

Case typically has a large waitlist. Some years it really moves and they really need it to fill the class. Take 2020/21: there were 1304 Freshman, and 1076 of those were from the Wait List! Yes---82.5% of the class of 2024 came from the WAITLIST!

Other years they take 0 or less than 20.

Case definately has a difficult time predicting yield. IMO there are several factors affecting this: First, Cleveland isn't the most exciting place so location works against it for many (many would rather be in California or NE/Boston area); 2nd being just below the top tier means that many, many of their admits/accepted students also wanted to go to Ivy, MIT/Stanford/CMU/T25 schools (Case is a "t20/Ivy reject" school) So it's very hard to predict how many will get accepted elsewhere or not each year and if they can afford wherever else they were admitted. ****I state this as someone whose DC ended up picking between Case and another slightly higher ranked school that has similar problems (location that can make Cleveland seem downright amazing and a class full of students/applicants many of whom applied to and wanted to attend Ivy/MIT/CMU/Stanford/T25 schools and have the stats on paper to earn their lottery ticket to the admissions game. DC will not be attending Case, but it was a good school, just not the best fit for them.

It seems this year they have eliminated a large portion of the list but are still keeping some students on, with the possibility of a spring admit. DC got an email today explaining that they're still interested in DC if a spot opens up, which they claim they might not know for a couple of weeks. We'll see.

We're in the same boat.

We too! DD got the Final Check e-mail yesterday. Fingers crossed for everyone!

Wow! Congrats. That almost never happens!

We know. Something like 3.5%. It made our week.

Congrats. We know of a few who got off UChicago waitlist, but were asked to take a gap year.

So they are expecting some admits to fail out?

Did your email talk about the possibility of study abroad in the fall, with a link to a webinar that happened tonight?

How were you informed? Are they finished their WL? My DC is on UChicago's WL and we did not hear anything .

The regional admissions rep called DC’s school counselor who called me. I indicated strong interest. The admissions rep then sent an email to DC and called that evening and made the offer. They wanted to know we would accept which we did on the spot.

The next day we got an email with details and a requirement for a $500 deposit.

Thank you. How did you express strong interest? My DC sent a LOCI. Do you recommend anything else?

Yes via Verto. Not too sure about that. Did you attend their session?

Her stats are way higher than CW's averages, yet they put her on the waitlist. I suspect it's because she didn't visit the school. She was hoping to get accepted before visiting. She's already accepted UVA, but still would go to Case if they accepted her. This waitlist thing is strange.

This seems pretty unfair - especially with the ups and downs of Covid, many people have curtailed college visits. Not to mention the families who can’t afford it ….

That said, if it’s indeed your DC’s first choice at this point and the cost of travel is not an issue, I’d call admissions, set up a time to visit, and get on a plane. Even if it’s an up-and-back, same day trip. A little risky (you don’t want your DC bonding harder to the school but then not getting in ... ) but if you want to maximize their chances of getting in off the waitlist, a visit is the way to go!

Wash U also going to the waitlist.

We attended. Seems like fun, if not rigorous, but maybe that’s ok for a semester. They definitely seemed to push kids to sign up even of they hadn’t gotten off waitlist.

UChicago's yield must have tanked this year. The last thing they want is to send out more offers of admission to wait-listers and have THOSE people say "no". For them to go to the trouble of making direct calls to a wait list kid and school, and then making an exploding verbal offer BEFORE giving the written (real & recorded for USNWR) one shows UChicago's really worried about their yield and the impact on its ranking.

One kid got off the Oxford @ Emory waitlist on Reddit. No word of the main campus.
