MIT also recruits sports. As a result, my DC turned down the offer and went to an ivy instead. MY DC lost respect for MIT after seeing her less prepared peer across DMV got in with sports. SO PEOPLE, SPORTS IS YOUR KEY! |
+1 |
Completely true. In our case, the many national level awards scholastic or science and international awards for performances just are not enough because mod being upper middle class mixed Asian? Who knows! I give up! My DC will be fine and won’t be one of those who would drop H-bombs type of people. I think lawyers can most about where they went. |
my Asian kid had lower stats and got into multiple Ivies. So what? |
You are special and hit the jackpot. So don’t rub it in to the rest of us, because I can guarantee you that those who didn’t get the offer are not any less intelligent than your Asian kid. |
| Unhooked FCPS male for class of 2023 has excellent test scores (800-M, 720-ERW one sitting) and grades (4.4 GPA) is delusional about his application prospects to MIT, Harvard and Columbia for CS. Despite showing him the admission numbers, he is "half assing" his couple of matches/safeties by not showing interest. I realize mom and dad dont know anything and really afraid this is going to come back to bite him. |
Yes, it really might bite him in the ass. CS is typically one the most challenging major to get accepted into. Everyone applying to these 3 schools have similar stats, yet 93%+ will be denied admission. If he doesn't pick true safeties and show demonstrated interest he could easily be extremely disappointed come April 2023. It is your job as a parent to ensure he picks true safeties and a few true targets. |
Hang in there. It’s only April. There is plenty of time for hs counselors to do their job. There will be a different vibe as he and all of his classmates formally begin the application process in later this summer. He will hear stories of the bloodbath of 2022 from classmates about siblings. Counselors will share cautionary tales. Of course, nothing you say matters. But he is listening whether or not he shows it. |
thanks. Sure as he'll hope so!

Ivies also recruit for sports. Heavily. |
never said that, but the idea that being Asian is somehow disqualifying is pernicious. |
Last year, many kids didn't have a choice to submit or not. They never got the chance to take the SAT or ACT at all. |
pernicious, baneful, noxious, deleterious, detrimental mean exceedingly harmful. pernicious implies irreparable harm done through evil or insidious corrupting or undermining. NP
|
Absolutely, but they don’t hide it. Most people don’t know that MIT recruits heavily too, and think that the students there are all based on academic merit only. |
Can you hear your attitude? You fit right in in that category! You must be a unpleasant person in real life with no real friends. |
