| Op here. Thank you for the ideas but I feel stuck as my nonprofit job is administrative so I have little business skill to be able to transition to consulting. |
I'm also in nonprofit. |
Is administrative work what you want to do? I really don't think you can blame your 20-something choices for this situation if you're unhappy in an admin job after 13 years in the workforce. Admin jobs can translate into corporate skills easily - operations, human resources, chief of staff type jobs. Or, I've worked with a lot of admins who chose a function in the org, told their boss, aligned themselves with it by picking up extra projects, and then moved into it after a few years of good admin service. Have you talked to your boss about your long term goals? Have you applied to admin jobs in orgs with better growth potential? |
| I know nonprofits don't pay like private sector, but it still seems like you're underpaid. My S.O. is about the same age and works at a nonprofit and makes over $100K. This is the environment to get out there and get a new job, that's the only way to get a significant raise. |
What does your SO do? |
You are being disingenuous. You had a degree in English literature and then you became a project manager as soon as you graduated. Just like that. Uh-huh. |
Consulting is such a vague term. I’ve seen it several times just on this thread. Consulting doing what? Which sector. Please share job titles for someone with an English literature major with say killer written and communication skills. Please.we will be be in the red next year if I don’t go back to the job market as my DH is unable to work. Long story and two little kids. |
| I’m also a diplomat kid and grew up the same life. We had major high level postings…… and now I earn $69k a year working for a non profit as well. Can we start a club??? |
Lobbyist? |
40 here and wondering if I should go to law school like I had originally planned. Did you go to a school in the area or a top 14 |

I think it’s interesting that your father explicitly told you that you needed to focus on making money, yet you ignored his guidance. Did you think he was wrong, or just not care about making money at that age?
I have a bit of the opposite story. I grew up LMC with a single parent. My parent is service oriented and suggested helping people jobs were prioritized in our household. But I knew that I wanted money so I majored in CS (this was in the late 90s). I’m not rich compared to many on DCUM but make more $ than I thought possible. On the other hand, I know a few people who grew up UMC who are now probably LMC who just don’t care much about having a lot of money. It is hard in this area, but I think it’s easier to be happier, especially with more modest incomes, in other parts of the country. Good luck. |
I make $130k as a senior manager at an international health NGO. I’m 50, have done this work since I graduated from college…with a degree in English Literature. I went into the Peace Corps, then got a MPH, and I’ve gotten a promotion every couple of years. I went into this work assuming I’d never own a house and would eat lots of beans and rice, and it was still worth it to me. I own a house, pay my bills, and save for kids college. I don’t regret my career for one moment. OP, your problem is that you are in admin, not that you are in NGOs. Switch to admin in the private sector or a fed and you won’t make any more. You need an additional skill set, and then you can advance. Figure out what you want to do, and go do it. |
What do you do in tech? |
How did you transition into a fed if you are not a vet |
|
I have no sympathy for you
You are privileged and can easily get another job paying double |
