Bad Vegan (Netflix documentary)

Just finished watching last night. very unsatifying imo.

They never explained the HOW or WHY she was under his spell-if she really was in fact controlled by him.

They should have had a psychiatrist/psychologist/mental health professional explain the psychological abuse/control.

Did they ever explain how they had all that footage from before anything went wrong, it seemed like someone was doing a documentary from early on. And all the phone calls that were recorded, seemed very unexplained.

wtf, such short sentences, does not seem right at all.

I loved all the restaurant people and also her sister and father, they were all so real and told the story so well.

I think the series was too long for the story. On the substance, I do believe she was swindled but like Tinder Swindler I don't get how these people are falling for this stuff??? Sending thousands of dollars to these men??

I do think she gave some insight into her state of mind, though not direct as I'd like. The business of being in Vegas and staying in the hotel all day, not getting out of bed, lying about who she is to the Chipotle guy . . . she clearly had/has some mental health challenges. I think at some point she realized she had been duped and just sort of comparmentalized that. If she didn't think about it, did not change it, didn't do something about it . . . then it didn't exist. And now she is, what, several million dollars in debt, a felon, with no prospects. She is faced with all of this and will never be able to overcome those things (she's not Martha Stewart) but now she HAS to.

While I was watching, my every other word was - idiot. She knew he was full of it, but that desire to be rich and that he could be her savior was too much for her to walk away. I can't believe the balls of that dude.

Martha Stewart didn't swindle her investors or neglect to pay her staff. I just don't understand this dumb woman. I understood that she got swindled, but the point at which she was giving him the money that was for her business was ridiculous. If you know you need to make payroll, why would you send him $100k?

The point is the MS overcame her conviction and is probably as popular as she was before. She doesn't have the same challenges that Samar will have and does have. MS knew she'd be fine on the other end. Samar knew she wouldn't, at some point.

What no! She was a willing participant in the a scam. She sucked the money dry and then went on the run. That’s why she stayed in the hotel because she was on the run and wanted by the police. Remember she cooperate with the show so she could push the blame on others. She supplied recorded phone calls that made her look like a helpless victim. She is not.

Watching this with my teens and the comments are like “maybe she has a vitamin deficiency from being a raw vegan?”

Do you think she gave it to him expecting to walk away from the business eventually and live lavishly together? And that the calls and texts about his brother and the tests and the immortality were staged?

She yes was all in. She worked for Bain Capital, Bear, Stearns and graduated from Wharton Business School. She knew exactly what she was doing.

I agree. She was also going along with all of his requests because she wanted three things that he said she could have "unlimited wealth, immortality (for her and her dog), and power." What a selfish woman.

And when she tried to compare what she did vs her mother, that's when I really lost all respect for her. He was telling her mother that Sarma needed help, that she was in a bad situation, of course her mother would do anything she could think to help her daughter. Maybe the gullibility doesn't fall far from the tree, but Sarma was stealing/giving away other people's money to benefit herself. Her mother was doing it under the impression that she was helping her daughter.

This show is about 3 episodes too long. It should have been a 1-1.5 hour documentary. It's like they had 5 people explain the same topic they were in different ways. It also had a lot of reading so not good background TV. Just too boring and slow.

By episode 4 she starts getting a little squirrelly. Her shiftiness and halting tone and faux earnestness "oh uh huh, yes, I lied to my investor. Of course, what else could I say" (or so like that). And when she says she didn't think they were on the run. She's so full of it. I believe that guy conned her, but she has some responsibility in running away.

Do we think she believed the mystical/paranormal things? She said Anthony would need to shape shift to get into that "house."

I honestly can’t tell. Why else stay with him and continue funneling money if she didn’t believe him? It’s not like she was getting the money. It was all gone! I’m guess I’m leaning toward she’s just a new age moron.
