Bad Vegan (Netflix documentary)

Is anyone else watching? Holy hell! This story is wild. If you liked The Tinder Swindler and The Puppet Master, you’ll like this one. I’m halfway through and I can’t wait to see what happens. How do guys like this convince people of these crazy stories and to turn over so much money?

Just started this yesterday. Unbelievable how many scammers and their very intelligent scammees are in this world.

I want to watch this but the premise is hard to understand from the preview.

Could you explain without spoiling what she did? They were saying she was stealing from employees, what does that mean?

With The Drop out and the We Work and We Crashed docudramas and documentaries, it's very clear: they lied to investors and told them they had this great tech that didn't exist. What exactly did the vegan lady do? Doesn't sound like it was investor fraud.

I watched the first episode. Pretty good so far. Gotta love the Alec Baldwin connection!

She was funneling money from her restaurant (including investor money) to her scammer husband. So she was frequently behind on (or just stopped paying) bills, rent, payroll, and taxes.

I watched the first two episodes and I don’t really understand it. It seems so bizarre, this is real?

It is very difficult to understand. They are not providing much analysis of why she fell so deeply under the spell of this narcissist and how exactly he controlled her other than vague statements.

It’s too toxic, I’m having a hard time watching. I also cannot fathom how she (a successful business woman) fell prey to his wacky claims, despite everyone around them seeing through him and sensing his weirdness immediately.

+1 I finished episode 2 but I don't think I'll continue. I just don't understand how this all happened and everything she says sounds ver vague, she gives no insight into why she believed all this far out crap he was talking. It's all too weird. And the phone calls are uncomfortable to her. He's cussing her out and she just has this passive-sounding meek and monotone voice the whole time. I wish a MFer would...

I watched all of it and do feel she needed to be held accountable and was pulled into the relationship initially because she thought Anthony would save her financially. But, by the end, I couldn't help but feel sympathy for her. During her interviews, you could tell she was still struggling emotionally and coming to terms with how she let this happen. I think at some point she was so far into it that she mentally shut down. I probably would have been almost suicidal if were her during those last months with her husband.

Yeah, I just finished episode 4. There’s no way she believed her dog would become immortal, etc. She was a swindler too. Obviously she has her demons/psychological damage and perhaps she’s a bit more sympathetic than he is, but she went along with a lot of his crap for her own gain.

I don’t necessarily think she would’ve broken the law if she hadn’t met him. And my guess is that she did get in over her head and just decided to become passive and put blinders on.

I really don’t buy that she was in the dark about his fraudulent behavior. And she is just way too smart and steady to buy his immortality BS. Everyone at the restaurant could see him for who he was - he wasn’t even a particularly charismatic guy. She knew what she was doing.

I'm only on episode 3 now, but I listened to the Swindled podcast episode about it first (highly recommend that podcast, btw). I just don't understand, and I'm only getting more confused the more I learn. How did she fall for this??

That’s why I don’t buy it. It seems impossible.

Without giving any spoilers away, the end suggests a way to view how she fell for it. I enjoyed although i think it could have 3 episodes not 4.

I only just finished episode one, and have already injured myself rolling my eyes so much. I would never believe anyone who told me they were black ops, and quite frankly, if you're walking out of an apartment with a baggie of diamonds, But I believed nothing Sarma was saying this guy told her.
