Are the wealthy leaving MCPS?

OP who are you and why are you asking?

OP here, I’m a country club member and parent who had two kids at MCPS who are now in private school. My club went from about 40% of the kids at MCPS to about 15% since Covid.

Now it is closer to 70%. Most that made the switch aren’t coming back. So definitely fewer wealthy families using public in our neighborhood but it is not everyone by any means.

BS

I don’t know why people find this hard to believe, but it’s true. This is one of the wealthier neighborhoods in the county so it’s not representative. But there has been a strong exodus to private.

Many will realize the privates here aren’t much better. This coming from a parent of a student at a top boys school in DC.

I not making in claim that private is better, but descriptively yes many people in the wealthiest neighborhoods switched their kids from public to private. This is probably only a few hundred kids in a county of 160,000 students. But the question is did the wealthiest leave and the answer is yes many did, but many also stayed.

Similar dynamic in lacrosse. On my middle school kids club, about 60% of the kids were private. It’s now 90%.

Point taken. I do believe many will be disappointed when they realize that the privates are not much more than just polish and shine. Especially when you assume with what tuition is that it should be head and shoulders better. Not even close.

We're in a W-feeder ES. It's one of the wealthiest feeder ESes mainly because the area is only SFHs and no apartments or townhouses. Anyway, DD was early ES two years ago, and about 1/3 of her class left, including her. They even lost one teacher in that grade due to low enrollment.

I'd say that's the extreme case though -- there aren't that many school zones in the county where a lot of the school can easily afford to move to private.

There was definitely a bump in private school admissions during 2020-21 but many of those families have since left and gone back to public and some have stayed.

It's really interesting to me how many private school families like to come back and troll the public school forum as justification for why they left it just seems very insecure and tacky to brag about it.

Private has been a disappointment after leaving public, difference is it’s cost me over $30 grand a year to learn that.

there are a ton of wealthy people in this area. Only limited spots on privates that are worth the money for your average child

It’s interesting to me how trolling just means to you “people who do not agree with me”.
I’ve got kids in both public and private. You won’t be offended if you’re secure in your choice.

We came from DCPS and, while MCPS has its problems, DCPS is way way worse. I have no direct experience with FCPS or ACPS, but I hear many of the same complaints that I hear about MCPS from folks with kids there. The pandemic revealed some real problems in public schools and its not unique to MCPS.

Exactly. It's the real VIP experience. You always want VIP. It's always better. Always.

Exactly. Do you think I'm basic?

There's no evidence to support this. People seem to be happy with the exception of a few far-right posters that like to stir up trouble.

Ya the same poster keeps starting these doom and gloom threads. I think they have a political agenda, but the reality is my kids are getting a much better education than I got 25 years ago at Wooton.

Same poster starting the same thing over in a new thread every day. They really hate public education.

After attending the magnets my kids found it a big step backward.

What do you mean? Magnets were a step back? I’m curious.

Obviously they meant they found private was a big step backward after attending the magnets.
