Inventing Anna

The accent sounds pretty spot on to me. It is very strange. I’m on episode four and eating this series up!

I remember reading the NY Mag article when it came out and I was fascinated and disgusted by Anna, so I've been waiting anxiously for the series to come out. I am really enjoying it. I love that Vivian is part of the story. Journalists are never the story, as it appropriate, but that means we never get to see the kind of grunt work it takes to uncover something juicy. I'm on the Morocco episode and am pacing myself because I don't want it to end. Julia Garner's accent is a little grating but her face acting is amazing. The way she conveys Anna's disgust with the hoi polloi is perfection.

I liked it. I knew of the story, but i didn't follow it. And for those complaining about her accent (i agree!), her attorney calls her accent "creepy" at the end. It was pretty funny.

I really liked Laverne Cox! She is so fantastic in this.

Too bad. This could have been riveting.

+1.

I was not interested in the reporter or her story at all. I found her exasperating and annoying, and the (many, many) scenes where she groaned and knelt and clutched her pregnant belly were cringe-worthy. I wanted to forward through all of the boring scenes about the reporter and her backstory or her relationships with her husband and coworkers.

The story would have been better without her character.

Me too. FF all reporter stuff and not a lot of insight into anna. Wasted opportunity. Hope someone does a remake which is good.

I think the show’s treatment of Rachel is funny because the real-life Rachel was so clearly opportunistic and so insufferably sanctimonious as she criticised Anna in various televised interviews.

Here’s just one clip of Rachel, talking about her two-month friendship with Anna, and Rachel’s utter shock and self-victimization. She does the same little-girl voice and eye-widening expressions that the actress playing her does on the show.

Anna Delvey MADE Rachel Williams as a writer. Rachel’s only story to tell is this one, and she’s profited hugely from it.

+ 1. I found Rachel detestable from the start, from the first NY Mag article, even with the obvious note that Anna was a con.

I love the character and the actress playing Neff.

Rachel was not remotely a sympathetic character. She glommed on to Anna and was along for the ride until it abruptly stopped and she was flung over the side back to her real life.

i liked Nora and Val

That was the point! Apparently Anna’s accent was not consistent and did not seem to be any specific language.

I am liking this show more and more with each episode.

+3. Shonda really failed here.

I was very interested in this story- love reading articles about it- but I couldn't even make it through the first episode.

I disagree - I thought Vivian's character was essential here - it's a story within a story plot. You can't just leave it out. Also, I wonder if this is generational or based on what you typically watch. The actress playing Vivian is Anna Chlumsky - who is famous for My Girl and Veep. There is no one under 40 who doesn't immediately recognize her.

I loved the soundtrack. All female artists, I think.

I only knew headlines about this story. I watched the first ep and kept waiting for it to get good or interesting. It never did, so I thought the end of ep 1 was going to be this great bombshell. That also didn't happen. It was very cringey when the reporter kept talking about how IMPORTANT HER CAREER WAS TO HER and how clear they made it that she is not super into having the baby that's about to pop out. The fight with the editors was so cliche, too. I may keep trying if I am very bored.

I know who Anna Chlumsky is: what’s your point? Do you think that just because she’s a recognisable name, her role is good? I still think the reporter character and her story distracting, boring, and unnecessary, but if you want me to give recognition to Anna Chlumsky, OK. Anna Chlumsky “overacted” her scenes, relying too much on that stupid face-scrunching thing she does in almost every scene. Anna Chlumsky scrunches up her face and widens her eyes repeatedly, as if she is still relying on the cutesie gestures that were adorable and appropriate when she played Veda in My Girl. The face scrunching is not cute anymore. It does not carry the character. And Anna Chlumsky looks rough and old for only being 41. Happy?
