Also, I HATE the drink connection. Having the same name as an alcoholic beverage just sounds so tacky and stripper-y.

How is Paloma hard to say? And what drink? Paloma means dove (or pigeon)

+1. I don't understand these concerns. I've never heard of a drink called Paloma, and everyone knows it's a name and not derived from an alcoholic drink. I pronounce it Pah-low-mah. It's phonetic.

But I also like the rest of OP's names, so IMO you can't go wrong! Gwendolyn is cute and not popular, and Juliet is lovely (I prefer the simpler spelling).

Thank you. I would have never put a w in the name!

I think my phonetic transcription is off, now that you say that. I don't actually put a w in either. Pah-loh-mah is probably closer.

I vote Juliet, with potential future little sister named Paloma.

PP. H and I both pronounce it Pah-Loh-Mah, but it absolutely sounds different (and much better) when he says it vs when I do. Just like any other word when said with an accent, it can be phonetically the same but still sound very different.

Most people know the drink, it’s tequila and grapefruit juice. If you Google “Paloma” it’s pages and pages of recipes. Most people will associate the name with the drink, not with the literal translation.

Better to use it for a middle name IMO than a first name.

Hmmmmm. OP here. Much food for thought. It’s my third child, so it’s my last chance to really choose! My husband and I battled it out for the last two. Okay, so the bottom line seems to be that Paloma is divisive, Juliet is good but trendy, and Alice is a dark horse, along with Gwendolyn. I am going to have to puzzle this one more. What do people think is a good middle name for Juliet?

I like all of these.

Who won those battles? If he's picked the first two kids' names, it's your turn. If you have named the first two, it's his turn. If you each got one, back to the drawing board.

I don't think Paloma is divisive, I think DCUM only likes "ethnic" names if the ethnicity screams Whitey Von Whiterson. They'll recommend Aoife and Linnea and then tell you "ugh, naming a kid Paloma is like naming her Margarita" without even realizing they're outing themselves as ignorant drunks.

Disagree, I think it's that a lot of white people have become wary of anything that looks like it could be cultural appropriation, and worry about giving their kid a name that seems like cultural appropriation. Actually, not limited to white people. I know people who gave their kid an Indian name about 10 years ago and didn't really even think about it being an issue as they are a mixed race couple who travels a lot and it didn't seem disrespectful to them. And now their child gets asked constantly about her Indian heritage and it is pretty awaked when she has to explain she doesn't have any.

So I don't think people are being racist (in this case). I think they are responding to some cultural sensitivities and just wary of wading into it. Though in this case the kid would be a quarter Mexican, so I personally don't see an issue at all, I get why people are sensitive about it.

I like Paloma and did NOT think of the drink first! I thought of a dove first, and then Paloma Picasso. Alice was on my short list for girl names, so I do think it's a classic. Juliet is nice but I think I personally prefer Juliette or Giulietta as suggested above. But Juliet Paloma does sound nice! I think it will also depend on last name for flow. Gwendolyn seems like the odd name out on the list.

Funny! Since people brought up a grapefruit drink and margarita that I would have never thought of from Paloma.
