If we did Gwendolyn we would likely call her Winnie or Wendy.

Yeah, we aren't giving you much consensus! Sorry. I like Paloma a lot but it sounds to me like it's more your husband's choice.

I like Juliet and love your inspiration. I think you just need to sell your DH on it. Here are some arguments in favor:

* It's a recognizable name but is not super popular right now at all (#306 in 2020) and also not on a trajectory to get more popular (has been hovering in the 200s and 300s the last decade, and actually declined in popularity the last couple years) so you could feel pretty confident that it's not going to be ubiquitous

* Not only is the literary reference meaningful to you, but Juliet is the kind of name little girls enjoy having, without being too ridiculous. Little girls often like super feminine names like Arabelle and Ariana or princess names (real or imagined). Juliet fits right in with that aesthetic, so your DD is likely to like her name as she grows up. That will contribute to confidence.

*But it's also a sophisticated name that suits an adult very well. This might be what pushes past Gwendolyn/Winnie/Wendy for some people. There are people who don't like a too cute name on an adult woman, and Juliet is not that. It will work well in most professional settings without being overly serious or dour either.

That's what I have so far. I honestly like all your names and think they'd all work well, so my arguments above are not about putting any name down, just trying to make a strong argument for the name you clearly like most.

I like Juliet, but here’s Juliette’s info(it’s possibly a future trend):

I would pick Paloma.

+1 Juliet is 306, but Juliette is 180, up from 377 ten years ago. You have to consider alternate spellings when you're trying to figure out how popular a name is. Combined the number of births puts it somewhere between 60 & 70 on the SSA list (but of course that's not exact, because you'd have to aggregate all the spellings of all the other names to figure out true popularity). It's not Sophia but it's fairly popular and trending upward. (Seinfeld voice: not that there's anything WRONG with that)

Have you tried saying the full name to see what sounds nicest? That’s what I did when picking my daughters name. I found that names that started with certain letters sounded better with our last name.

Winnie and Wendy are both very cute.

Agreed. I like those much better than Paloma or Juliet.

My H is Mexican and Paloma was his pick. I said no, because while it's beautiful when said with a proper accent, I can't say it that way and most people can't, either. So it just sounds off and I don't want to spend my life unable to pronounce my kid's name properly.

Also, I HATE the drink connection. Having the same name as an alcoholic beverage just sounds so tacky and stripper-y.

Just wait until she is born and one of the names will fit her.

I like Paloma. It sounds very calm and tranquil. It reminds me of the Spanish word for word, Palabra. However, I agree that it sounds "off" if pronounced without the right accent, which is why I like Juliet. Juliet is pristine and regal without being frilly. Paloma and Juliet together make a good first name/middle name combo. She could go by either her first or middle name.

Paloma Juliet
Juliet Paloma

How is Paloma hard to say? And what drink? Paloma means dove (or pigeon)

Yes but, the op doesn't. I think the mom's vote should have greater weight since she is carrying the baby. I would compromise and use it as a middle name.

+1. I don't understand these concerns. I've never heard of a drink called Paloma, and everyone knows it's a name and not derived from an alcoholic drink. I pronounce it Pah-low-mah. It's phonetic.

But I also like the rest of OP's names, so IMO you can't go wrong! Gwendolyn is cute and not popular, and Juliet is lovely (I prefer the simpler spelling).

Thank you. I would have never put a w in the name!
