Where locally are young kids not masked at school?

Yes, my kids complain about them and rip them off as soon as they get out of school. They're thrilled whenever we do an outdoor playdate or something that doesn't require masks. My 5-year old talks about wanting to see her friends' faces . We also attend a center that serves kids with developmental disabilities, and they are all really struggling.

Of course they do and it's your damn fault. Whiners raise whiners.

I have deliberately never complained about masks in front of my kids. Why is hard to believe/acknowledge that they would find them uncomfortable? Do you realize they are actually little humans with the same needs for comfort, verbal comprehension, and connection as us?

I'm the first poster of this thread asking about whether your kids complain but haven't replied since. I don't find it hard to believe or acknowledge. I was asking genuinely because my kids DON'T complain, but maybe I'm just lucky. I've been wearing a mask without complaint for almost 2 years now, I live in a super high transmission area (NYC), ride the subway, attend work in person, my kids are in school in person, etc. I'm dealing with it and my kids are too, but in my (lucky?) case it really does seem like "the kids are alright" and I'm just the one who's struggling. My kids are 6 and 3 and know little else about the world beyond the pandemic. The whole mask thing reminds me of hearing my grandma complain about how uncomfortable she felt wearing a seatbelt, and watching her often drive without. Whereas I never noticed my seatbelt once on, because that was all I knew.

Yup. My kindergartner came home today and told me through tears about show and tell in his classroom today. He was majorly upset that he couldn’t see any faces - “mom, do you think they liked it? I couldn’t see if anyone was smiling at me.”

My younger one is learning about what facial expressions mean using photos the teachers printed from the internet instead of just laughing and crying with friends.

Anyone who thinks this is not impacting the development of our kids in every way is totally out to lunch.

+1
Not to mention it’s difficult to understand small children thru the mask

Your kid will be just fine. You need to get your mental health checked if you don't get how contagious and serious covid is.

NP. Covid can be contagious and serious AND parents of toddlers and young children can be concerned about the effects of masks on development. These aren’t mutually exclusive.
I am high risk for covid so, even though I am vaccinated and received a booster 2 months ago, I’m doing as much as I can to avoid it. Simultaneously, I am also concerned about the impact the past 2 years of social distancing, masking, school closures, and repeated quarantines have had on my young children, one of whom was born early in the pandemic. Developmentally, she seems fine, but our pediatrician has said that their practice has seen an uptick in referrals to speech therapy for the young toddler set. Anecdotal, yes, I know. But you are kidding yourself if you think that inability to see the faces of caregivers for much of the day doesn’t have at least some sort of impact. Come on.

Anyone, like us, who is high risk is keeping their kids home.

Careful. Your privilege is showing.

Your privilege is showing with your luxury to send your kids in person. Not everyone is blessed with your good health. Must be nice.

Come on. The same way covid can be contagious and parents of young kids can be concerned about masking, there are families with high risk members that still can't afford to keep their kids at home.

You have zero data to prove “that’s how viruses work.” Like they’re suddenly stopped by two year olds who wear a cloth mask for half the day under their nose. Who is intellectually lazy?? Probably the person who parrots Joy Reid’s talking points without following the actual science. Which, most of the world is doing by now. Just not the country that’s fallen victim to idiots like you.

Only rabid maskers compare masks to seatbeats. You probably work from home. Wearing a mask 40-45 hrs a week for years (including in DC outside for little children) is a big flipping deal. My kids do it because there is no alternative but it’s getting old and it’s not nothing. Seeing faces has been proven to be really important like researchers have done tons of studies on that (I’m thinking specifically about the baby monkey who had two items in his cage, a bottle with milk and an empty bottle that had a face drawn on it). The baby monkey spent all of its time with the empty bottle with a face. That’s how important faces are. Christ. It’s a big deal. And for what? Cloth masks are garbage. Most higher quality masks don’t fit well enough to matter. Enough. End it.

You must have missed the part about my working full time and riding public transportation to work. I wear a mask all day. I'm not pushing a narrative that masks aren't problematic for some, but I hope you can understand that they might not be devastating (or even remotely detrimental) to others. I'm fairly certain my kids are just fine. I think it's totally unnecessary to spin others into a panic by comparing mask wearing to baby monkeys with inanimate objects as company.

So ANYWAY, are there any school recs out there? Or some that have a waiver?

Jan, we know your “kids” are 20 and 25. Quit perusing the parenting forum. You have nothing of substance to offer.

My 12yo hates wearing masks. According to her no one can hear her, it makes her break out, and she gets super sweaty. She also finds it hard to breathe with one sometimes.

Everyone hates wearing a mask but we do it to protect ourselves and others.

Yes, the school in your home. Simple process to file a waiver.

They don't wear them the 3-year-old program at my public school. Every kid in the class had Covid the week before break.

I agreed with this pre-vaccine. Now, there is no reason to (badly) mask a 3 yr old for parts of the day to “save grandma”.

My 2 year old screams every time a mask gets close to his face. Why? Because it’s not natural to block your airways even a tiny bit for long parts of the day. Even 2 year olds get that. Not to mention the concerns about a 2 year old’s development. Why can’t we just follow the WHO? Why is this the one thing the CDC is insane about?

Of course she knows that. That's why she wears one.
