Got reported to child protection service

Its either fake or it happened. They are being vague. You need to know the exact amount why?

Cupping serves no purpose and is embarrassing the kid, which no one here has thought to raise.

Sounds like scraping.

People in the DC area are quite ignorant when it comes to understanding things that the FDA does not push on them.

Good luck OP.

Its not cupping. Stop saying its cupping when its not. I have done cupping and really liked it. I would not do it on my child even though they asked as I don't want abuse allegations even though you can very clearly see what it is as its a perfect round circle.

All of you are culturally ignorant.

No, its called coining. Its very common in Asia and in Asian communities.

I had cupping done as a kid (like a PP, I grew up in the USSR where it was common) and it doesn’t hurt. This said, your day care was absolutely right to report this because that is not a practice that is done here (I wouldn’t have even known the English name for this procedure until this thread resulted in my looking this up) and they do look like bruises. Better safe than sorry!

I would cooperate with the investigation; odds are it will be fine if that is all you actually did. And I would stop the practice because without getting into a debate as to whether this procedure is useful/unpleasant/whatever, any benefits of it clearly outweigh the risk of being reported - sure you will get cleared after the investigation but do you really want to deal with it repeatedly?

So many "cultural" things happen to children that are most definitely not OK in this country. For example, stoning is cultural and some parents think its ok especially when girls misbehave, female circumcision is ok in some cultures, branding is ok in some cultures. None of those things are ok in a civilized world today. Just because it's been done in some cultures for a long time, doesn't make it ok here today.

When you go to Europe, they should call their CPS on you for having your son circumcised. It's not OK to mutilate babies in civilized society.

Who said anything about me getting my son circumcised (or that I even have a son). That practice is definitely on its way out in the Western world as well which I am glad about. The more you know.

Apparently, you don't know much and use your ignorance as an excuse to call other cultural practices barbaric.

I really fail to see your point? It's ok to continue these practices because they've been done for centuries and "culture." Perhaps think through your arguments before calling other people ignorant.

Both of you are ignorant if you don't know what OP is talking about. So, you can stop arguing about it now.

I never mentioned cupping and I'm pretty sure OP didn't say that's what it was beofre I posted so shove it.

Correction - I meant to say “clearly do NOT outweigh”

When I do cupping it is extremely painful and looks like big purple bruises but this isn't what OP is talking about.

I don't need to know. I've just never heard this phrasing.

Anonymous wrote:This is OP. I have never got reported elsewhere, and this is my first time ever. I am not from here (excuse my writing), and I have 3 beautiful children, and my oldest is 10, and this is my youngest. The treatment is similar to cupping (but not exactly like that), and it is used in my home county and some foreigners pay for this here. They are bruise like, but they will be gone in days and painless. My child has been feeling a bit under weather for weeks, but he is not really sick. So, I decided to do that on him to make him feel better.

DH tells me that I will be fine because CPS can google up the treatment (I did not pay for treatment and I did that myself ) if they want. I have done that to my family members (DH and my parents) and my other children before for years, so I know what I am doing and I am not hurting my child.

I believe you, and I'm sure others do too, they're just having fun with you.

However please stop. One day CPR might not believe you. The daycare was correct in reporting it. Naturally you understand that they must report any injury that looks serious.

I agree that OP should stop the practice, regardless of the outcome. Any mandated reporter HAS to report this type of bruising. Also, this isn't just a "daycare" thing that is solved by removing your kids from daycare because your child will continue seeing mandated reporters in school and elsewhere (teachers, school nurses, coaches, guidance counselors etc.).

+1. totally agree. The daycare had no choice but to call CPS, and I would to. CPS will do the home visit and full investigation. You will need to coordinate with them when they arrive. I believe that multiple visits will be required. If it's cupping or gua sha, I'd imagine that you can demonstrate and submit evidence of the practice in your culture. I will say that I've had both gua sha and cupping and they leave terrible marks on the body (Particularly the gua sha). But in the future, you should avoid this type of treatment on children becuase you know exactly where this is going to lead you.

Yes, if this was coining or gua sha OP is DAMN lucky she was reported in Montgomery county, which has a large foreign-born population (including East Asian) and is also a large county with social workers that are trained in cross-cultural issues rather than elsewhere, which will help her.

But, OP, let this be a lesson and don't do this again. You can be reported again if someone sees bruises on any of your kids at school or at sports practice.

Either this is fake or OP wasn't sure anyone would know what it was. It is very clear its coining as that is what is done on young kids and leaves marks. Usually they are red marks, but they can turn purple just like in cupping.

It is considered abusive here. Its considered normal in other parts of the world, just like the USSR poster is saying about cupping.

Not all county social workers now about coining. Most social workers aren't that great. And, very few Asian's are on MCPS CPS caseloads.

yeah but her chances are at least better in MoCo than in bumf*ck.

Having said that OP really should just discontinue the practice with ALL her kids. The marks from the practice are really noticeable and any sort of patterned bruise is considered suspicious so she really needs to stop.

A cultural thing that good for health seems to imply it's something that was done to the child, not Mongolian spots that appear on an infant. Is cupping a cultural thing? This is very odd.

It seems like childcare did a good job in reporting.

Cupping is a cultural thing. So is coining. It's not abuse, and no they did not do a good job reporting if it is in fact that. TF.
