| I drove by Maury this afternoon at maybe 4:30 and there were a whole bunch of police outside and at least one ambulance. There was also a relatively large crowd of people, so I couldn't see what happened... and it may have been something that happened outside rather than in the school. Anyone know what happened? |
A child was hit crossing Constitution. I don't know further details. Cars NEVER adhere to the 15 mph school hours speed limit nor do they stop at the cross walk w/o a light. DCPD please enforce!! |
Oh god. I hope the kid is ok. |
+1000 |
| Seemed pretty serious. The girl wasn't responsive as far as I could tell, though it did seem like she was breathing. One of the first people on the scene was a pediatric emergency doctor, which was a fortunate coincidence. |
| Is the child who got hit by the car ok? |
| Oh no, how awful!! |
| Please give an update! This is so tragic and I am praying for that girl and her family! |
| When I went to Maury years ago Constitution was a one-way rush hour street in the mornings. Cars would fly down the street and we'd have to dodge them on our way to school. Some people still treat the street that way unfortunately. |
| This makes me SO angry. I live in the neighborhood and am sick of cars speeding through not caring that it's a pedestrian neighborhood. I hope to GOD that child is ok and the driver gets punished! |
| I haven't been able to find anything about this anywhere else. I really hope the child is ok. |
Constitution is a MAJOR westbound COMMUTING ROUTE from Maryland. DC has not done anything to establish commuting routes and keep people out of neighborhoods. In fact, I contend that no systemic urban planning has occurred to account for commuter traffic-aside from the highway upgrades. It is a major problem, with no end in sight. The solutions seem to be piecemeal and just puts traffic on to different neighborhood streets. Pennsylvania Avenue, east of the Anacostia, major commuter/pseudo neighborhood DDOT, between Branch Ave and the Sousa Bridge took a lane to create a divided Main Street. Maryland Ave from 15th St, NE to 6th St, NE again major commuting route but instead of facilitating traffic flow, medians were erected, traffic flow restricted. I am not defending people speeding through the neighborhoods- but this is a systemic problem. |
THIS A MILLION. |
No. Those changes to MD ave were a "road diet" to protect pedestrians. Maryland had too little traffic and was too wide, so cars were speeding down it. If anyone is in that much of a hurry, park somewhere on the Blue/Orange/Silver line in MD and metro in. If drivers can't be responsible, then they're going to be inconvenienced even more. http://tooledesign.com/marylandave/ |

DC is not responsible for making it as easy as possible for driving commuters to get to/from the city. Full stop.
The systemic urban planning you're asking for exists. It is bus lines, metro, and other public transportation. Use it, or drive slowly and carefully through our city streets. |
