There's no excuse for being human, got it?

Thomas Jefferson wrote a founding letter of our nation. And he was a president that brought in a good fourth of the US. And he started a public university. If that doesn't qualify you as a strong American and a proponent of education, I don't know what does. He's a human with faults who still acted above his own behavior for the good of America's future. I have no problem honoring him at all even with his egregious faults.

I'm not going to honor him at some monument for black women. In fact he can even be on the list of perpetrators. But in this regard for the US and for education, he rightfully should be honored.

You think you are a better candidate for your dcum responses? What have you done to benefit education in Virginia that rises above Jefferson? Some of the new names of these schools aren't even for people who lived in Virginia much less supported education.

So put up or shut up with the anti-TJ posts. All they do right now is remind us you post from your basement.

You mean there isn’t a single white supremacist or a single boot lick of such doing so. However, since they are changing the names of other schools named after white spremacists, may as well change TJ’s too since he was not only a white supremacist, but also a rapist who preyed upon children.

Slavers and patriarchal oppressive rapists leaders in Arab/African countries did pretty well for themselves.

Not working out too well for the slaves or the poor and what merchant class there is/was.

Might be why so many who can escape run to America and Europe for education and a better chance at life, we have done better with turning our countries around and creating opportunities for better lives for all classes after outlawing slavery.

you mean like John Lewis? Nat Turner would have been a better option, but the white supremacists would rather honer an out of state “turn the other cheek” guy, than a great freedom fighter like Nat.

The US hasn’t even tried to make right the mistreatment of the slaves and descendants of slaves who have been abused on American soil for over 600 years. Yet, claim to be making things better for all these other groups. SMH.

We have made progress though and we must continue to make progress. And I'm sorry, TJ helped shape this country with a framework which for better of worse has shaped and changed many lives for the better. I'm thankful for him. We all make mistakes that we look back on and learn from. Had he lived longer I'm sure he would have been on the right side just like 70s and 80s era kids that thought Blazing Saddles or 16 Candles was funny look back now and cringe and know so much of what was societally normal was not okay.

Social constructs of his time thought that what Jefferson did was beyond the pale; that’s why he fought so hard to keep his secret. The shame of it nearly ruined his daughter Martha from his first wife. The fact that he raped his dead wife’s little fake sister when she was a young teenager was NOT the norm back then and it was a huge scandal, one that rumor mongers got ahold of and made a big deal about. Remember too that not all the Founding Fathers had slaves. The other shameful fact was that Jefferson was so profligate with spending that he died deeply in debt and the families of people he enslaved had to be torn apart to pay his debts. That was also deeply shameful for his family. He was shockingly irresponsible even by societal standards then.

This is incorrect. Having a concubine wasn't uncommon. The expectation was for discretion. And being a concubine was not an undesirable life for plenty of women then.

It was a very different time.

Who cares? We shouldn’t be worried about any other country. Our job should be to do the best we can for the past any present people of the United States

Agree. There were plenty of abolitionists and people who felt slavery was immoral in TJ's time. So, First PP, stop pretending that wasn't the case.

LOL. I"m sure it was great to be raped. Prob why Sally Hemmings attempted to stay in France instead of returning with TJ. Because it was such a great gig for her in Monticello.

The genius and erudition of Thomas Jefferson will be remembered long after bitter revenge hacks like Ibram Kendi and Nikole Hannah Jones are forgotten.

Ah, yes, the eloquent white man who led us to enlightenment vs. the uneducated black folks who are just angry.

Good thing racism isn’t real.
