To enter in on the ridiculous conversation above,
Handmaids and unwomen had all sinned so insufferably that this is the only way to repay their debt to God. Children would never be raised by one of these women, and the children would never be grouped into that category either. Unless the child grows into an adult, and the offense is to become a handmaid or unwoman. |
| I know it won't happen but I hope June dies so we can stop seeing the stupid close-ups of her face all the time. |
| It continues to annoy me that there are never consequences for the characters we are supposed to care about the most. It's totally implausible that 50 plus kids could walk silently through the woods at night without the guardians, already on high alert, hearing or seeing them. Especially since the Martha that came too early and then ran away would have told them that it was based out 9f Lawrence's house. And now that the kids are gone but the Marthas and handmaids stayed, they should be summarily executed, but I bet they won't (maybe one Black Martha will be, but not the others). |
I didn't think that. They only knew about one missing kid. They mention rohypnol earlier in the episode so the implication is that the marthas drugged their owners into oblivion before taking the kids. It would be hours before the scale of the caper was known. As for the walking through the woods silently part I think you have to put yourself in the place of kids that have been raised in an extremely punitive and restrictive culture for years. The baby I assumed they must have drugged as well though. And I think it was explicitly stated that the Martha that took the baby killed the "parents" to get away. That is devotion. I also don't think that just because they took the Martha means she would spill. She knew she was dead already. The culture of secrecy among the underground networks was clearly ironclad. It is one thing to abscond yourself. It is another to essentially kill every other Martha and handmaid in the scheme and ensure no children made it out. |
I think that there will be heavy consequences next season. But- some of the people in power in Gilead are really good at controlling official narratives. In the eyes of Gilead June had nothing to do with getting Nichole to Canada, for example, because Cmdr Waterford didn’t want his household blamed. Entire households are executed for things like not observing the rape ceremony or other transgressions. Something like the suicide bombing carried out at the red center couldn’t be hidden, and that handmaid’s entire household was immediately executed. If I had a Martha who may or may not have been involved in the “kidnapping” of those kids, I would be in fear for my own life and therefore may very well provide an alibi. |
I think that the powerful men of Gilead make and adjust the rules to benefit themselves. They are pious in the way that a wealthy televangelist is pious- lip service to lead people on, with the real objective being personal benefit. Serving as a handmaid is supposed to be an act of redemption, so it’s conceivable to me that a powerful commander could declare that a handmaid who has provided babies to Gilead has redeemed herself and now can be his wife. I don’t think it’s ridiculous to think about these things, even if you disagree. |
Completely agree. |
| Did the Martha that killed the baby's parents make it onto the plane? |
I'm not sure but I don't think Rita would have been holding the baby if its Martha was there. |
| I loved when the Marthas were getting all Martha-y, and wrapping up all the little rustic lunches and filling glass water carafes for the children. |
I feel like Pinterest got a spike in activity after that episode. |
Traditional values! Serena almost didn’t know what to do with a Starbucks cup. |
Yes, me too. |
I agree |
Over 52 kids were stolen. Fertile hand maids stayed behind. They will not kill them because they need them. The Martha’s are likely goners. |
