| I love Serena's character...she thought she could sell out other women without harm to herself. She deserved to lose her finger- but I will give her points for giving up Nicole. |
Spoiler alert****** The dip in the water at her mother’s house looked like a baptism scene- I took it to mean that she was reborn with a different outlook, but reviews indicate that there will be a fight to get the baby back from Canada a la Elian Gonzales. I wonder what Serena's involvement with that effort will be. |
hmmm...if that happens, I will think that this show is designed to raise my blood pressure. Seriously though, this show scares me a lot when I think about our present society and efforts to control women's reproduction and the misogyny behind it (yes, I know this is entertainment, not political). |
+1. A son, maybe. Not because he was loved less by me, but because the Giliad odds coming from a well off high ranking house would be in his favor. But I would never save myself and leave a daughter there. Ever. I would die getting her out rather than leaving her to be raped, mutilated, and enslaved— if things turn out well. Wouldn’t any mother? |
I think the reviewer was short sighted. I am loving it so far. A little slow, and yes, there are some repetitive themes because you know- men still treat the women like crap. But still very powerful to see how the women deal with it. |
| Any good podcasts people are listening to for this series? I was late to the game for nerdette’s GoT podcast. |

Anyone know what she tied around Hannah's wrist at the McKenzies' house? I couldn't make it out.
I thought I was going to have a stroke during the Emily&baby scenes. So powerful, and so beautiful when the border agent found her. |
I agree with the Emily scene. So powerful. On the show follow up video they said the applause at the hospital was a spontaneous act by the extras. |
I took the walking into the water along with the burning of the bed/house to be failed suicide attempts. Both times she is thwarted by the appearance of another character. The walking into the water is similar to/reminiscent how Virginia Woolf committed suicide. |
I think so too, though the second time she clearly changed her mind. She seemed to walk by her husband contemptuously which I took to me she will be joining the resistance as she is able. |
*mean not me |
NP. That was the only point I cried. Imagine if that was how we greeted these women traveling through Central America for asylum. |
| Why do the handmaids do grocery shopping? I would think that’s something the Martha’s would take care of. |
To give them something to do and to be visible to the public. |
