It's totally implausible that 50 plus kids could walk silently through the woods at night without the guardians, already on high alert, hearing or seeing them. Especially since the Martha that came too early and then ran away would have told them that it was based out 9f Lawrence's house. And now that the kids are gone but the Marthas and handmaids stayed, they should be summarily executed, but I bet they won't (maybe one Black Martha will be, but not the others).

Over 52 kids were stolen. Fertile hand maids stayed behind. They will not kill them because they need them. The Martha’s are likely goners.

Also clearly there were no actual hand maidens in the houses with the children - they would have moved onto their next commander and assignment etc. Only the Marthas could be persecuted for what happened because only they could have obviously removed the kids from the homes.

She said "My Hannah is ten." (I watch with closed caption.)

I wondered how I could have missed that comment!

After she pulled the gun on the little girl she cried to the commander that “I almost shot her for crying. She’s 10, my Hannah is 10”.

I didn't think that. They only knew about one missing kid. They mention rohypnol earlier in the episode so the implication is that the marthas drugged their owners into oblivion before taking the kids. It would be hours before the scale of the caper was known.

As for the walking through the woods silently part I think you have to put yourself in the place of kids that have been raised in an extremely punitive and restrictive culture for years. The baby I assumed they must have drugged as well though. And I think it was explicitly stated that the Martha that took the baby killed the "parents" to get away. That is devotion.

I also don't think that just because they took the Martha means she would spill. She knew she was dead already. The culture of secrecy among the underground networks was clearly ironclad. It is one thing to abscond yourself. It is another to essentially kill every other Martha and handmaid in the scheme and ensure no children made it out.

The real issue with the children's silence is that they were brainwashed, and lived with adults they consider their parents. For most of them being taken away from their homes would have been terrifying and traumatic, and they were way too young to understand the gravity of the need to escape for their own well-being. It is inconceivable they would have been silent under those circumstances.

And even if they weren't talking, that many people walking through the woods makes a lot of noise. Even if the guardians were only looking for one specific child, any halfway decent surveillance state would have heard them and investigated.

Great, great episode! Hopefully a foreshadowing of the next season - June as a freedom fighter!

And I want Commander Lawrence to help her!

21:49, I think that’s the point: they aren’t a halfway decent surveillance state. Gilead isn’t very competent. They rely on terror rather than actual loyalty or skill to achieve control of the populace.

Plus, these guardians didn't know they were looking for 50+kids and marthas in the woods. They thought they were looking for one kid, maybe alone, and probably not in the woods at all (more likely held in a house or smuggled into a vehicle).

And no doubt those kids have been subject to very strict discipline since Gilead’s beginning. Spare the rod and all that. It’s no surprise to me they were able to be close to silent.

Especially since they were all girls.

I liked when she walked in, and Josh Lyman was reading a book to all of the kids. Even curmudgeons have their moments.

I don’t think they were all girls and it looked like they were mostly a smidge older? So maybe would remember? I guess realistically if Gilead is 5 that would mean 10 or older. Not sure but I definitely didn’t see toddlers.
