They are pious in the way that a wealthy televangelist is pious- lip service to lead people on, with the real objective being personal benefit. Serving as a handmaid is supposed to be an act of redemption, so it’s conceivable to me that a powerful commander could declare that a handmaid who has provided babies to Gilead has redeemed herself and now can be his wife. I don’t think it’s ridiculous to think about these things, even if you disagree. [/quote]
