In the book, babies born with disabilities or visible defects were called “shredders.” I shudder to think what that name means. All people with disabilities were executed once Gilead was established.

In the book, baby Angela turned out to be a “shredder,” if I remember correctly. Which makes me worry that they will find some unacceptable defect in her in a future episode...

One of the most important things that happened this season was June moving past her singular focus on her own children. She’s willing to risk her life for the general good now, which is why people have started viewing her with more respect and as a hero. She did all of this knowing that she wasn’t getting Hannah or herself out.

The turning point was that episode that we all hated in the hospital- June was forced to confront the fact that people were dying as a result of her selfishness, and that’s when she decided to “get children out” rather than just Hannah.

Ha. DP. I actually liked it. I didn't participate in the convo here because I caught up on the last 5 or so episodes this week in prep for the Wed finale but I thought it was an important episode. Tough to watch, but it really brought the story together in many ways.

Perhaps I found it less annoying because it was sandwiched in as a part of a narrative instead of like, just watching that episode and being done for the week!

How did the commander know Serena forced Nick to rape June? I think I remember her telling Waterford that it was Nicks baby but how did he know thats how it happened?

Waterford knew that Serena arranged for Nick and June to have sex (Serena told him as much when she was denigrating him for being a loser). Even if Serena could claim to have no choice in Cmdr Waterford’s rapes of June, she was 100% responsible for the forced sex between Nick and June that first time, at least. June didn’t have the ability to refuse.

I am curious as to whether Nick would be held accountable for rape if he were to leave Gilead; whether he is seen as part of the regime or a captive. If he is seen as part of the regime he would probably be seen as guilty of rape whether June “consented” or not.

There’s a lot of mystery with Nick’s background. It seems to me that he was suckered into the Sons of Jacob army when Pryce was “finding him employment” at the jobs office. Nick was adrift and just trying to help support his family; Pryce took advantage of him, and once Nick was signed up no doubt he didn’t have the option to leave.

One or both of the Waterfords talked to the Swiss delegation around the same time Nick did, probably to spin him as a player in the rise of Gilead. The Swiss lady then told June that Nick couldn’t be trusted, Serena hinted to June that Nick was hiding important information from her, and Nick warned June that governments/politicians in general couldn’t be trusted.

I’m on team Nick, but when the fall of Gilead comes he may very well appear to be on the wrong side of history. I don’t envy whatever governing body will have to sort out the good guys from the bad guys.
