Given the last two posts, Jefferson Parish sounds like a good place to avoid. I’m startled — although I’m probably shouldn’t be— by how little attention these heinous incidents are getting. It’s almost as though the relative lack of media attention is confirming that this is business as usual. I’m heartened by the investigation, though.

+1 I’m white and it is beyond belief. The stats speak for themselves in terms of different life expectancies, different maternal and baby health outcomes, rates of imprisonment and rates of getting death penalty.

Just recently perfectly normal black parents of a 7 week old baby girl were kicked off an American Airlines flight for nothing other than needing a bit more time to rise from their seats to to let another passenger take the window seat. The air hostess was shocking and even knocked a cell phone out of the hands of the father who rightfully defended his family. I’m not flying American Airlines until they offer a public and genuine apology to this black family.

I am blessed to not have met my fate with all these depictions above. But, I went to a state park and went swimming in the river with my kids and was told to get out of here by 3 white families using floats on the river. I want to be naive and assure they told me to get out of here because they wanted to use their floats on the entire section of river.

How old are your kids? If they are very young, then clutch your naïveté if you need to do so for your well-being, and think about how you will talk about your park visit with your kids in the future. If they are not very young, then you need to discuss the situation with them — including how they might feel and how they might handle similar situations in the future, especially if and when they are on their own. IMO

I’m sorry that this happened to you.
