This article slaps the school board in the face. Those board members should resign.

Ummm . . . you do realize TJ Math 4 students are not those in the controversial class of 2025, right? So this article is crapping on students admitted under the old process. So, if anything, this article seems to suggest that the people saying kids that are artificially prepped for an entrance exam and then flame out when around truly gifted, non-prepped kids may be on to something.

I had long suspected that the new selection process was yielding stronger results but glad to see the evidence is already out there.

This article didn't say 2025 students are better. How did you conclude the new selection process was yielding stronger results?
TJ usually have 20 AIME each year. This year it drops to 8. This is the evidence to show the new selection process is worse than before.
There will be more statistics out.

It includes class of 2024 students and 2025 students. We do not know how many of them are from 2024 and how many of them are from 2025.

My understanding is that the Math 4 students may be a mix of students from different classes, including the Class of 2025.

But whether they are or are largely misses the point, which is that TJ has to be under a lot of stress for a group of Math 4 teachers to send out an email blast to the kids in that class that says - at the end of the school year - that the kids had poor study habits, weren't holding up their end of the TJ bargain, and performed worse than any TJ class in recent memory.

It seems like earlier intervention should have taken place. But it didn't, in part because people were apparently so focused on blasting out positive PR about the admissions changes.

Whether you like it or not, this school is in trouble. Entire departments at other high schools aren't sending out emails telling kids to repeat courses, reconsider their commitment to their school, etc.

No, you are wrong.
This year's math 4 includes class of 2024 and 2025 (mentioned in the article). Assuming class 2022, 2023, 2024 have the same qualify of admission, if this year's math 4 is worse than previous math 4, that means the new admission is worse than the old admission.

How are Math 4 teachers involved in or distracted by the TJ admissions process? Too busy trashing low-income kids on DCUM?

You’re assuming the *only* change is the admissions process.

We also had a disrupted 1.5 years from the pandemic.

Yet somehow the other TJ classes were just fine.

It's nothing about income. Low income families also have capable kids. We should forget about income and race. Academic merit should be the only standard.

Not everything needs to be turned into a new admission process vs. old one debate.

This is much more of an indictment of FCPS' terrible response to the pandemic. Kids who had significant portions of their foundational math instruction online, where As were handed out to every kid making the slightest effort and where cheating was rampant are not doing well now that they're being held to real standards.

Citation? Where are the results from the other math classes?

Plus it was a crazy chaotic & uncertain time in our history. Very stressful.

A smart apolitical school board would have anticipated that and not pushed through such big reform in this timeframe.

You are quick to jump to the conclusion that fewer Asian kids is a stronger class. Hate them much?

They have tried it many times in the past. All failed. BLM in 2020 helped them. Otherwise they were not able to make it.
