9-year-old Won't Wear Jeans

Anonymous
So I fully admit this is an incredibly stupid issue, but it's where we are.

My 9-year-old daughter won't wear jeans, or any pants or skirts with a fly. She says they don't feel comfortable. We've tried different brands, sizes, cuts, etc. -- she won't even put them on. Right now she's sobbing because I asked her whether she might want some for school this year.

Ordinarily, I try to respect her right to dress herself and make her own choices. But the fact is, nobody makes attractive pull-on pants for tween girls, and she can't live her whole life in leggings and sweatpants. We got by with dresses when she was small, but none of her friends wear dresses now and so she doesn't want to either. And she had a major growth spurt, so we are looking at basically replacing most of her wardrobe.

I don't want this to turn into a power struggle. I know I will lose and it's not worth it. But is there some way I can Jedi mind trick her into wanting to wear a pair of freaking jeans?

What does she want to wear? Let her wear that.

What about starting with jeggings? Sort of a hybrid type pant?

Or let her wear leggings, but she has to wear a dress or a skirt over them. My 12 year old niece doesn't really wear jeans or pants with buttons for the same reason. But around 10 she started only wearing leggings under longer tunics. Make sure they are higher quality leggings so that they aren't sheer.

Then I'd drop the rope on this and let this fall where it may. She doesn't have to dress like her peers as long as she's dressed appropriately. Jeans are not required.

Why not? My 9yo daughter hates jeans, too, and lives in leggings (not really sweatpants). She says jeans are really uncomfortable. NBD. She's happy and comfortable in her leggings.

My now 13 yr old spent two years wearing only yoga pants. Then only leggings for two years. Now only skinny jeans. You HAVE made this into a battle. Just let her wear what she wants. It'll change as she gets older.

Well my husband hates jeans, and I don't wear them too often - what's the problem with that?

OP here. Okay, given how fast and unanimous the response was ... looks like I'll be buying more size 10 yoga pants for school this fall. Which is what my husband said we should do in the first place.

It's not what I wanted to hear (obviously) but thanks for the reality check.

There are lots of pull-on cords and jeans. Also, overalls seem to be in these days- you just need to look. Doesn't have to be yoga pants only.

Neither of my kids (8 yr old DD and 11 yr old DS ) wear jeans. They both hate them. They both still wear pants with an elastic waste band, no zips. I don't see the problem. If she doesn't care if it's attractive, honestly, neither should you. My DD dresses herself; as long as it is weather appropriate, I don't say anything. She mixes, stripes with polka dots, leopard prints, etc.. , with neon colored socks. No ES kid bats an eye.

In a few years, she may care about how she looks. Right now, comfort is more important to her. Honestly, comfort is more important to me than any fashion sense, too. Let it go.

She can make her whole 9 year old life in skirts and leggings and sweatpants. And they make pull on leggings that look like jeans. She's 9!!! She will change by the time she's 12.

I'm in the same boat. Occasionally o can find a pair of pants that are "soft" as my daughter says and she will wear them. But it's mostly pull on pants. And my boys refuse long pants of any type except when required by their jobs.

You could also consider pajama jeans. The idea is a little stupid and they are expensive (I only have one pair) but they are quite comfy. I'll be putting them on my Christmas list so Santa can pay for another pair or two.

My son (and a few others that know) hate to hear "button" pants. That includes jeans, khaki's and dress pants. He lives in elastic waist band clothes- athletic wear is our friend. I don't and won't fight him on this issue b/c I hate them too.

What about something like this? It has an elastic waist, but pretty much looks like regular chinos. http://www.landsend.com/products/girls-elastic-waist-blend-chino-pants/id_267680_1187?sku_0=::BLA.

My son also hates pants with a fly, so I buy him the boys' version of this. They do offer more color/style varieties for boys, though.
