Public Trump Impeachment Hearing Mega Thread

LOL, Trump said he doesn't remember the phone call with Sondland from the restaurant in Kyiv. So now, whatever the two witnesses claim was said, will have to stand because Trump doesn't remember it.

You're missing something here, though... Whether willful or not, it's very clear that a large portion of the American public is ignorant to the Constitution. You and I might agree that what Trump did is wrong and in direct violation of what was intended by the Constitution, but how many people are out their saying he didn't break any laws and this is not a big deal? I've been cringing at the amount of (usually older) people I overhear saying that this impeachment trial is a joke and the democrats are just embarrassing themselves. I'd like to think that they just truly don't understand, but honestly, I think they're fine with it. They think it's okay to make a few threats, because in their minds, he didn't pull out a gun and shoot someone in the face. And even then... they'd probably say it was justified. Actually, when you think about it, it's terrifying to not only realize the abuse of power that is being thrown in our faces, but how many people aren't even batting an eye at it.

One great thing about being older is that you have a sense of historical perspective that younger people do not. Those of us who have lived through big events like war, assassinations, riots, economic upheaval, etc. is that you know trivial BS when you see it. Ukraine is trivial BS. Sorry if we older folks are hard to persuade otherwise. Also we don’t get high and forget to vote on Election Day.

Please stop. You are embarrassing yourself, and now, your whole generation. Conspiring with Russia is a BFD. Extorting Ukraine in defiance of U.S. interests is a BFD. Openly fleecing the government is a BFD. A major political party turning itself into little more than a criminal organization is a BFD.

Sondland will have to testify about this now, and he can turn over his phone records.

You sound so old that you don't remember that bribery is a crime. Bless your heart.

Hunter Biden told me that bribery is not a crime after all. And neither is using cocaine! What a guy.

Hunter Biden is irrelevant to this story, despite the Russian propaganda through Joe DiGenova/Victoria Tonesing attempts to make it so.

From an entertainment perspective, Hunter Biden is the only part of this story that is interesting at all. Big cash payments from sketchy foreign companies! Crack binges! Fooling around with your brother’s widow! I see a Netflix series in his future.

I don't know, the Cyber security expert who locks himself out of his own phone and his 2 aged psuedo Russian mob minions are pretty damn hillarious.

I still get a crack out of the president who committed campaign finance fraud by paying hush money to a porn star he cheated on his wife with.

There’s an election coming up...isn’t that a more appropriate way to determine this nation’s leadership? But if you want 2020 to be all about Trump vs. Adam Schiff or Trump vs. unnamed CIA employees, don’t be surprised when Trump is re-elected.

okay, boomer

By the way the previous most idiotic thing I had seen was the Clinton impeachment, which of course blew up in the faces of the GOP. At least in that case, your average citizen understands pretty well getting caught with an intern. This Ukraine stuff just does not have the same entertainment value.

I think the average citizen actually understands this pretty well. Maybe you don't? If I am holding a pen, and you ask for it, and I say "sure, but I need a favor from you," I think most people understand completely that I am holding onto that pen until you do me a favor.

It is precisely because there is an election coming up. Among the founders' concerns, as documented in the notes of the convention, were that an unscrupulous president might do anything to get re-elected, and at the power o fhis office at his disposal. This is EXACTLY the kind of situation they foresaw as needing additional remedies.

On emptywheel.net, a commenter proposed the possibility that the Charles in the pocket-dial (I hate the word butt) voicemail is the Charles that gave Rudy's company the half million for the Parnas and Fruman, you know, guarantee of fraud (aka FraudGuarantee). (Also, couldn't give to Rudy because Judith would try to claw back some, couldn't give it to FraudGuarantee because P&F's creditors would want it).

So, also, the security expert who pocket-dials discussions about money and fraud and leaves it in a voicemail . . . to a reporter.

I suppose because of feminism we wouldn't have a Martha Mitchell today?

First, there's no evidence that Hunter Biden has committed a crime. Second, HE'S NOT THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES EXPLOITING HIS OFFICE FOR PERSONAL GAIN. How hard is it for you to keep this little fact in your head; maybe age is the culprit?

Anonymous wrote:The first day of the impeachment hearing was a fiasco for the Democrats.

Their star witnesses offered second and third hand testimony about alleged conversations and acknowledged that Trump had done more for Ukraine than Obama ever did.

And we had some clown actually saying that hearsay evidence was more reliable than direct evidence? How does someone like this jerk even get elected to Congress?

Actually, they have first and second hand accounts. You know who could give firsthand accounts? Mulvaney, Pompeo, Guiliani, Bolton etc. Unless or until any of those folks testify, the sworn information the House will have will stand as the record. You would think, if there was exculpatory evidence these potential witnesses can give, they would give it. If there were documents and emails/texts that contradicts the informtion gathered to date, you would think it would be provided.

Why hasn't it?

You cannot complain about "secondhand" information while also withholding evidence and ignoring subpoenas.

It is 100% true, proven, and admitted that the security assistance was held back for months by Mulvaney and that no explanation was given to Congress, DOD, or State.

It is 100% true, proven, and admitted that Giuliani and Sondland pressured Zelensky to make a public statement about investigating 2016 crackpot theories and the Bidens.

It is 100% true, proven, and admitted that a public commitment from Zelensky to investigate 2016 and the Bidens is not a U.S. foreign policy matter, but would help Trump and his 2020 campaign.

It is 100% true, proven, and admitted that there was a rush to have Zelensky make a public statement about 2016 and the Bidens by early September so that the security assistance could be released before the end of the fiscal year.

The only thing second-hand is that a bunch of experienced professionals with sterling reputations say that Mulvaney, Giuliani, and Sondland all have said that everything they did was at Trump's direction.

Well said!

No. What is the personal gain that Obama got out of this statement?

I say this as someone who listened to the impeachment hearings for Nixon and Clinton. Those hearings - especially the one for Nixon - was riveting. This has been a sleeper so far and I say this as someone who is a political junkie.

This seems to b the right-wing talking point. It's boring.

I am a Democrat; the goal of these hearings is to turn public opinion in favor of impeachment and removal of the president.

DP. Many people don’t need a hearing to do that. We all see the President’s behavior, and are concerned. But we respect the process.

Signed,
The American Republic

Partisans on both sides have already made up their minds - the hearings make no difference. There is a broad swath of voters who are independent or still wonder if impeachment is the best course of action. They are the ones who need to get on board if one is to have any hope that 20 Republican senators will vote to remove the president.

Very liberal girlfriend just said that the impeachment is a joke. After mueller, Dems need to focus on winning elections and not this political crap

Hmm

That's nice. I'm also a "very liberal" women and learned a lot today and welcome getting this all on the record. I have zero expectations that GOP will do their constitutional duty but it I'm glad to see patriots like Kent and Taylor, stand up for the the right thing.

You’re the reason I have to listen to this ‘OK boomer’ crap (which is extremely offensive, BTW). I’ve lived through all the things you listed, and I know BS when I see it. Ukraine it not BS; in fact, it’s the most egregious presidential abuse of power that I’ve ever seen. What happened to my generation?
