The White House didn't agree to it, therefore the BBB was dead. End of.

Maybe the White House should have been working through the night lining up support in both chambers of Congress instead of sniping via surrogates on national TV?

Manchin’s private proposal to the White House — the details of which have not been previously reported — was made just days before a spectacular public collapse in negotiations between the White House and the senator, marked by bitter and personal recriminations that left the status of the talks unclear.

The White House was weighing how to respond to Manchin’s proposal last week when on Sunday he told Fox News that he would be unable to support the current version of Democrats’ Build Back Better agenda.

I think it's completely sick that West Virginia has one of the nation's highest rates of child poverty yet Manchin turned his back on and spat on those WV families in need.
He is truly despicable and YES, he DOES work against his constituents' interests.

Yawn. That statement means nothing. You know why? There are no children in West Virginia.

It has one of the LOWEST number of children per population in the entire country and one of the fewest in the nation overall. So when Manchin says his constituents don't care?

THEY REALLY DON'T CARE about the BBB bill. Because let's be honest what does it do for anyone who doesn't have children?

Out of 50 states, West Virginia (excluding the District of Columbia) is #40 for number of children under the age of 5. They have 95,000 total.

Out of 50 states, West Virginia (excluding the District of Columbia) also ranks #40 for number of children under the age of 18. They have 364,000 total.

That's out of a total population exceeding 1,800,000 million. They don't f**king care.

https://www.childrensdefense.org/policy/resources/soac-2020-child-population-tables/

Citation: Children's Defense Fund - Table 1: Child Population by Age and Race/Ethnicity, 2018

If you're curious California, Colorado, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, New York, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Tennesse, and Washington have the most kids overall.

Wow. So what children WV has, live in poverty, die early (infant mortality), and if they survive are doomed to fail in life (low educational achievement rates, far less likely to have a business that succeeds, far less likely to get rich).

And apparently that's how they like it. That's what they keep voting for.

Yeah, there's something wrong with West Virginians.

At least now the coal miner's union is angry with Manchin. They asked him to reconsider and sign on to BBB.

He's not going to do that.

A) Their Black Lung rider is an easier add-on to any bipartisan legislation that passes in 2022. Will get both Dem and GOP support no questions asked.

B) The Black Lungs Benefits Trust only costs $2 million a year to administer, $20 million total for a 10-year extension. Otherwise everything is funded by an excise tax on corporation profits in the areas affected by black lung. Unlike the Squad he's not an idiot. Trading $20 million for $1.75 Trillion is a fool's proposition.

Well Manchin told colleagues he thinks his constituents will spend child tax credit money on drugs, so he has a dim view of them himself.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/joe-manchin-build-back-better-child-tax-credit-drugs_n_61bf8f6be4b061afe394006d?gxj

In recent months, Manchin has told several of his fellow Democrats that he thought parents would waste monthly child tax credit payments on drugs instead of providing for their children, according to two sources familiar with the senator’s comments.

Continuing the child tax credit for another year is a core part of the Build Back Better legislation that Democrats had hoped to pass by the end of the year. The policy has already cut child poverty by nearly 30%.

Manchin’s private comments shocked several senators, who saw it as an unfair assault on his own constituents and those struggling to raise children in poverty.

Manchin has also told colleagues he believes that Americans would fraudulently use the proposed paid sick leave policy, specifically saying people would feign being sick and go on hunting trips, a source familiar with his comments told HuffPost.

I'll believe that when I hear it from Manchin's lips. Not believing a HuffPo story using only anonymous sources.

Yeah, right. Like Manchin is going to state this publicly.

They had 2 different sources confirm it. I believe it. Sounds absolutely legit that someone as wealthy and out of touch as Manchin would have such an opinion of his constituents. Why else would he ignore the overwhelming public approval of the BBB among West Virginians?

You are so out of touch on this forum. I am from WV. He’s right, and trying to fight the opioid crisis is a huge issue back home. His constituents won’t be offended at all, they want their family members to stop dying of overdoses.

Also, 74 percent of WVians oppose BBB. What overwhelming majority?

Who f’ing cares? Manchin got 290,510 votes. He got 49.6% of the vote. 80 million people voted for Biden. Under 1% of the voters can veto the other 99%. You think this is a workable system? No it is not.

WV native. People love him because he is normal. A lot of people know him and he is very personable. He really doesn’t care what AOC things and she would have nothing to do with regular WV people. That is just facts. BBB is not good for WV and that is why he said no. He is a politician with integrity. Many people cross the line to vote for him. He was also a wonderful Governor. People care about their gas prices, their food costs -they do not care about electric cars and why in the world would regular WV want to get rid of energy industry. FYI people need to stop making fun of WV-it is a beautiful state. Come visit.

+1 I'm not from W VA but agree with what you've said about Manchin and people's concerns in his home state. When I read an earlier comment with the descriptor "inbred," it showed the ignorance, bias, and condescending attitude of that poster.

Touched a nerve with Kentucky. Your cuz is very cute. Totally get it.

Now let us have nice things. Some people want to do better even if your family is happy in the holler.

I promise you, the people on this thread with the hateful comments are clearly republicans letting us all know what they really think of poor people.

Nice try. But, no.

You apparently disapprove of the hateful comments. That's good. But, they are quite in line with what we have heard from some of the liberals here in the past 4-5 years.

If Manchin is so worried about making his constituents happy, we need a provision in BBB to deliver trainloads of Oxy to WV- he’ll get on board or get primaried!

Hope that’s not to raw for the delicates here

LMAO Are you even American?

You literally just reiterated a system of governance that sparked off the Boston Tea Party and the Declaration of Independence.

Got to love to self-important UMC urban dwellers who think they are owed thousands in free money every month and will take away your power to participate in democracy if they don't get it.

Wait a second there skippy. What we have now is a system of government where the majority’s voice does not count. Seriously 290k voters in WVa can hijack and hold for ransom the rest of the country. It’s not a workable system. We do need to totally scrap the system in place. The Tyranny of the Minority must end.

Its the system the Founding Fathers set up when Boston had a population of 15,000 and West Virginia wasn't even formed for another hundred years. You think they didn't imagine this? What's more - you think the red state voters give a damned what you want? Get your head out of your ass.

Where in the Constitution is the filibuster?

You realize this isn't a filibuster issue, right?

Without Manchin the Democrats have 49 votes.

Actually, nevermind, this obviously isn't about facts for you, carry on...

If this was a 51-50 propostiion, then different GOP senators could be courted for different issues. There are elements that people liek Collins, Murkowski and Romney would each be supportive of without Manchin, but that isn't how it works anymore, so yes, the filibuster is deeply in play.

HAHAHA. So you admit it isn’t just Manchin? Sienna and some untold others are involved but don’t want to speak up? Lolololol. Guess it isn’t just old Joe holding up the bill, then!

Sienna?

Screw Manchin and the other republicans.

Strawmen.
Nobody is hating on poor people for being poor. They are questioning the judgement of poor people for continually making choices at the polls that keep them dead last in the nation.

Cinna Sienna is toast. Not at all impossible to toss her in 2024 and keep that seat blue. Manchin on the other hand needs to be replaced by winning senate seats from Republicans. There's PA and a few others that may be a possibility in 2022.
