APS Boundary tool--anyone get it to work yet?

Or they should move to Wakefield and get 50% poverty because advocating for balance in this County with folks like you around PP is truly the definition of CRAZY. ?

What are you considering improved demographics at Yorktown? What do you consider a better county wide balance?

Which schools? Most are bursting at the seams.

I am a parent who lives in the current WL school zone. I support moving more poor students out of Wakefield. I think the idea of creating a new island on the west side sounds promising. I also hope they build a new 4th high school. I can't imagine putting 1300 seats at the Ed center does anything. It would still unduly burden the WL campus.

Future Wakefield parent, and I agree. We do need a fourth comprehensive HS, somewhere else. In the meantime, I hope they can figure out a reasonable temporary solution that is the least terrible for as many families as possible (cause let's face it--that's where we're at. NOT the best solution, the least terrible).

What if they moved IB to the Billy Buck site?

I believe someone upthread mentioned that IB is woven into the fabric of WL in a way that would make it difficult to move.

All I think that means is some people worry W-L's test scores will decline if it loses IB transfer students from Yorktown and Wakefield.

Or it could be a legitimate observation.

Doubt it. There's nothing about IB that can't be unwoven from a school, particularly one that already has AP.

While I don't doubt it could be unwoven, why don't we brainstorm ideas that would have more people moving between the three schools voluntarily. What would draw higher SES students to Wakefield? We have AP and Spanish Immersion already, and that doesn't seem to be a huge draw. What other lottery program could we put at Wakefield that would be a draw, the way IB is for W-L. STEM? Or STEAM? Performing Arts? World Languages?

Honestly I doubt anyting would in the numbers you describe. You need to have less poverty at that school and most people prefer being close to their school. This isn't saying we shouldnt move some poorer students to other schools (assuming they want to be commuting further) like curent yor ktown island kids do. We are zoned for WL now and if ib moved to yorktown I doubt I would enc our age my kids to go there not when there are ap classes. A TJ has diversity but it selects for those students with top grades and scores. The stigma in arlington is that farms kids have lower grades/scores on average so that prejudices parents against sending their kids to schools with high farms rates.

make WL strictly walkers only, west of it to YT, east to WF. problem solved.

Do you mean house just the IB program? What would this accomplish? The IB program isn't big enough for this to make a difference.

My DC1 recently graduated from W-L, having taken a combination of AP and IB classes. My DC generally preferred the IB classes but did not pursue the diploma. (We're in-bounds.) I wonder whether APS could even offer the full complement of IB classes if they weren't open to non-diploma students? Is there really that much demand?

Another Yorktown parent jealous of W-L's IB program.

There are common ways to deflect charges of racism, even if you live in a 90-percent plus area.
