I'd say Michigan. It is a great school, don't get me wrong. However, it seems to be on every high achieving students list, when schools like UCLA, Cal, and UNC aren't. Also, UVA is just as good, cheaper, and easier to get into (although I do agree with some of the comments on this thread).

UCLA and Cal are west coast schools. There is a distance from DC that must be taken into consideration. Those two schools are Michigan’s public peers. UNC is not quite at Michigan’s level and is extremely hard to get into from OOS. UVA is the local school that, in spite of your aberrations, is not quite at Michigan’s level overall academically. How that makes the school overrated is beyond me.

Michigan might have higher rankings in STEM but the caliber of student at Michigan and UVA is the same based on test scores.

DP? This is more due to the fact that U of M is twice the size of UVA so is going to generate more research etc. (Note--I don't think either is overrated).

Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan if out of state. Most public schools are really using out of state students to subsidize in-state students and overall operations, so they are of questionable value in my view vs similarly priced private schools or other good in-state options.

The above statement no sense. Berkeley, UCLA, and Michigan are the three premier public universities in this country. They are also all ranked in the top 25 schools and are a better value than most privates schools at equal costs.

Not if you are out of state, which people in the DC metro area would be.

Any of the Ivies. They can't possibly live up to the tremendous hype they get around here. They are not the best.
