Confederate Battle Flag

A female republican governor of color. Enjoy the irony.

Actually, the only governor who has taken down the Confederate flag is a white guy. In Alabama. Haley has admirably called for taking down the Confederate flag but the legislature is the one that actually needs to do it and South Carolina.

Ah, so she doesn't count. Got it.

She doesn't count as the answer to "who has taken down the Confederate flag at this point." Because the goddamn thing is still up there.

Because there is an actual legal process. I know progressives don't respect the law though...

Doesn't 'intent' matter anymore? Didn't the SC just say it's all about intent?

Ironic you should be whining about intent as the stated intent of the Confederate flag was for it to serve as a symbol of white supremacy
The stated intent of Robert E Lee after the Civil War ended was sthat the Confederate flag should never fly again

The Confederate flags should never gone back up in the first place.
They should have been taken down long ago, as they were in many other places.
It's not necessarily all that 'admirable' that it's Republicans stepping up to take action - in each of those cases it's Republicans who hold the governorships and Republicans who control the legislators, so it's not as though Democrats even had the power to do anything about it in the first place.

I hate what the confederate flag stands for.

Jeb Bush took, what is commonly but incorrectly called the Confederate Flag, down from the Florida State House in 2001....

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-jeb-bush-confederate-flag-20150623-story.html

Got some kudos and some flack...and...it wasn't national story that I am aware of.

Of course there are a lot of people on here that believes the Republicans, and I am not a party affiliated person, are only NOW on the bandwagon...yet...this was done 14 years ago.

CORRECTION...another source said it was the Stainless Banner which is in fact one of the three official Confederate Flags http://www.nationaljournal.com/2016-elections/jeb-bush-s-clear-record-on-the-confederate-flag-20150622

If the GOP was on the right side of this 14 years ago, their candidates would have been on the right side of this 7 days ago.

Neither party is pure in this matter or any other. Neither holds exclusive rights to high moral ground. Neither should be respected for a simple fact, they care far more for their own party and being in power than America as a whole. For this reason I am an independent, have always been and will remain so. I would love to see all candidates run for a general election and let the top two receiving the most votes run for the general election. I would also like to see the winner take all electoral college changed, at the very least divide the delegates based on vote totals. But you won't see the parties agree to this. But if that were the case you might see the voter turnout go up.

Heard on the radio today that the Post & Courier has been polling members of the South Carolina House and Senate, and from that it seems like there is the necessary two thirds majority in both to pull the flag. Could be down as soon as next week.

This is a minor thing in a number of ways but a major accomplishment for it's symbolism. It can never be enough to balance the loss of the nine nor erase the pain their families and friends feel. But it is my hope that small victories like this will help assuage some of that pain and loss knowing their death brought to the fore some changes that were way overdue and reignited a positive dialogue among many American's of all colors.

The only thing I wish were different in the dialogue is all the political rhetoric.

And there are lots more like it out there - note that they are OVERWHELMINGLY endorsing conservative candidates.

Everyone knows redneck territory and liberals are mutually exclusive.

You forgot this one:

- and there are many other examples from other states; there are even more from Bill's election and re-election campaigns.

It's NOT an officially approved button. Most, if not all, candidates have buttons like that and if one sanctions it...then I will have a problem with them.

Not "officially approved" ??!? What about the votes it helped get for her? Were those "not official votes?"

She certainly did not seem at all opposed to the votes, or the campaign material bearing the confederate flag in 2008.

She travelled to the south three or four weeks ago to campaign; she even faked a southern drawl (an official one I suppose).

BUT SHE DID NOT ADDRESS THE FLAG. Imagine that - the perfect place and opportunity to speak out against the flag, and she failed to do so.

It's obvious she supports the flag when it suits her politically and opposes it whenever she thinks she can gin up a few votes.

Why should we trust her again?

"BUT SHE DID NOT ADDRESS THE FLAG"

WRONG. Apparently yet more shoddy FOX News reporting. Yes, she did address the flag. She said it should not fly, anywhere.

Have you always struggled with basic reading comprehension? She made that statement ONLY AFTER the massacre occurred. Why don't you find a quote from her pre-dating the massacre? -like maybe from one of the many times she campaigned in the south and pandered to them with a fake southern accent which magically disappears when she crosses the Mason-Dixon?

http://www.ijreview.com/2015/05/331226-hillary-clintons-fake-southern-accent-is-baaaaaaack/

Democrats have been silent on the flag up to now because they benefitted from all the votes by old southern democrat voters who love that flag.
