Gross generalization that is simply not true. Big clubs have resources that allow them to attract and keep good coaching talent - if your child can play at a high level in a club like that, I'd argue they'll benefit greatly from those human resources. Do the C teams in those clubs help underwrite that cost? Yes, but to say that they don't give a crap about kids is a little extreme and really not true. My kids have played for both, and I'll take the professionalism, depth of talent, and opportunities found in a big club any day. Are there great coaches in small clubs? Absolutely. But coaches, like teachers, come and go. If you go with a club that espouses a strong development philosophy and is more than one deep for an age group or gender, you have protection when a good coach leaves - there are others who can step in and take over seamlessly. In a small club, a team can implode from a coaching change - I've seen it happen. At the end of the day, you should go where the fit is best for your child and your family. For some that's a small club, for others it's a bigger club. It may also depend on the level of your child's play - a top tier player may do best on the top team at a larger club. A more average player may like being on the top team of a smaller club. I respect your preference for a smaller club, but don't go throwing baseless generalizations around. |
Yes, I think that's the one. |
Thanks. I had no idea who they were primarily associated with. |
Doesn't Fairfax have year-round practices, indoor, etc? Is this team just formed for tournament play? I am confused how these kids could do both. |
They practice at least once a week in addition to normal FPYC practice, and play tournaments outside the normal season -- summer, pre- and post-season. Like, for instance, the U9s will be playing in the Virginian in May as FPYC and then the next week as Joga in the Dallas Supercopa. |
All of the above VA teams had multiple state cup finalist teams this past year. BRYC alone had 7 state cup finalist teams last year. The Joga FC boosters should get back to us if and when Joga gets its first ever VA state cup medal. |
PP here: not a Joga booster. Not really sure what to think about the Joga thing, to be honest. Just providing info. |
Interesting. Am honestly wondering what is the value in this for the players? Just that they get to participate in even more tournaments (if that's valuable)? Judging by its social-media public relations, Joga SC is headed by a contrarian lunatic who may just be a genius. He's on a crusade of some sort. |
It definitely gets exposure for the kids. He makes a name for himself/club to expand. Don't know. I was there when Vista started in the 80s as an Independent club when there weren't any other options for kids not happy in their home clubs. It provided a sibling of mine (after leaving travel programs because of BS and getting individually coached and playing in adult leagues at age 13) a place to get noticed, win a State title, make the State team, win National awards and after a D-1 college career move onto play in the MLSI. We had 5 VA State Cup titles, 2 Eastern Regional Division titles, a National Championship title (only one ever from NoVA) and 2 VA State HS titles amongst me and my two siblings so I've pretty much seen it all in this area. When people talk about a club merely being in the semis of State Cup I am a little less impressed than people that are new to the scene. I am a lot more cynical as well. I have seen so much talent get squandered- especially when they label players at age 8 and overlook all others. It's much worse now than it was in the 80s. I keep hearing it's all about player development, but then the actions are completely different in the way they rank/label the kids at such young ages. It becomes nearly impossible for even a star to break out of that once they are labeled in their own club. I am at the age where former teammates now have kids playing. The theme amongst them is they all had to either Coach their own kid; one whose son is now the top U-17 striker in the US. The layers of BS to get through are ridiculous. Maybe Joga is a good thing to shake things up. |
BRYC claims four National Championships and VSA has a team that won a national championship two out of the last three years so I'm not sure about one part of your post. |
Yes. You are correct. I've been out of soccer for a good 20-years. |
Just be wary. A lot of recruiting and a ridiculous number of tournaments to get points and ranking in order to better recruit. |
Truthfully, I think the best way to go is to stick with your home club until around U-11/U-12 if you aren't getting what you want and your kid is truly promising. The most important thing is that they are having fun. I know many of my family member's declined promotions to the A-team until they were older so they could play the entire game on the B-team. You want to build confidence at a young age and being with those cut-throat psychos at 8 isn't the way to do it. My kid is on one of the lower teams--but it allows him to be a leader and score lots of goals right now. This has built his confidence tremendously and he's not afraid to take risks and try new things out. The players are all so supportive of one another--they really stick together when some snots on the upper team try to give them sh*t that they aren't on A. |
He certainly seems to be a genius at self-promotion, whatever else. |
This thread suggests that NoVa Travel Soccer is an exceptionally peaceful, collegial kind of world except that VYS is at war with itself; big clubs hate small clubs; small clubs hate big clubs; leagues with weird acronyms despise each other; ASA is all about flaming Joga SC; Kephern Fuller is angry with DC United; the people on the board stabbed Eddie Lima in the back (figuratively); Maryland is at Virginia's throat; people who want kids to dribble are livid with people who want kids to pass; VYS is a house divided against itself; SoccerWire is irritated with DC Urban Moms; and soccer people who don't speak accented English are furious with soccer people who do. Can't we all just get along?!? |
