2025 IAC and WCAC Playoffs Results and Commentary

Another low point for GP faithful.

A week ago, someone was touting the results of their stellar JV team that floated down kids who played varsity and JV.

And now we are talking about the Founders Cup.

Go hire a coach and be quiet,

Since then GP has been at least as good year in and year out.

Got a coach yet?

Shouldn’t be a problem. It’s only been a few days.

A school that has won 14 of the past 16 Founders Cups will be OK.

Cool is that the trophy that golf tennis cross country swimming soccer all factors into? Sweet

It’s how the Conference keeps score. Fourteen out of the last 16 demonstrates athletic superiority.

And it’s a lot better than crowing about lacrosse victories from the 1980s when no other school was even trying.

Where is this magical Founders Cup list? A quick check of the IAC conference site shows Landon winning the last 2 years. So, I guess GP won the prior 14?

Episcopal and STA had some good teams in the 80s and early to mid 90s. STA was very good in the early 90s and ran with Landon every year.

DeMatha and Good Counsel also fielded some competitive teams in the 90s. DeMatha even beat Landon a few times in the 90s if my memory serves me right. Ryken in Southern MD had some great teams but everyone forgets about the program in southern MD.

Preps program started in the late 80s and really began to take off early 90s under Giblin.

I wouldn’t say “no other school was even trying”.

“No school was even trying to” is more true than untrue. Certainly no other school had a captive feeder program in which the better athletes were channeled into the sport in lower grades and developed.

Giblin wasn’t able to convince the more athletic into picking up a lacrosse stick until 95-96 and the gap closed quickly after that.

As these other programs gathered steam, Bordley’s record became quite pedestrian against the better programs.

When's that announcement coming on McD coach?

McD coach turned down the offer. Back to square one for Prep

Quite pedestrian? Nope. However I agree that there was no competition for a LONG time - the fact that Landon won that game for so long is insane - it’s much better for both sides now that it’s anyone’s game.

I cannot believe that Giblin is even in the conversation about this though - how old is he???

Landon came onto the national stage in the late 90's and early 2000's. During this time period is when they started to taking it to the B-more programs up North.

Prior to that, there wasn't much competition in the DC area other than DeMatha, STA and GP.

What are the odds speaks from SJC or smith from GC jump ship to Prep?

I would bet that Smith is their top choice, and former OC from SJC and now SSSA coach (I forget his name) is their backup. Hiring Speaks would give Prep some much needed credibility and stability in the short term, but is not a good fit, and both Prep and Speaks are probably smart enough to see that.

Giblin is not in the picture. Speaks has turned them down once before. Smith has a good gig at GC and gets paid a lot more. GP is down to the Jim Zorn level.

Overzealous Prep alums and Prep parents are to blame for the coaching mess.

Urick was a good coach in a very good league. Even in a bad year, Hoyas still finished 3rd in the IAC, and beat their Jesuit crosstown rival, Gonzaga.

The timing of pushing at Urick and his staff is foolish. Why push someone out in late July... who did they really think they would land? This really doesn't seem to be very well though out.

Most high-end coaches have signed contracts in place with their current employer, whether it be an independent school or at the collegiate level. No high caliber coach with a family will pack his backs, move his family on a dimes notice.

My gut tells me, if Paro and GP administration can't find a local HS coach, they will likely go with an interim scenario. I'm sure local GP lax bros could run the program for the next 9 months. While this is taking place, Prep should take their time and run a national search.

The whole process seems disorganized and very rushed.

Lack of leadership displayed by Paro and giving into the pressures of crazy parents.

PP and I agree - I said that Smith was probably their first choice, but I didn't say he is interested. I was not aware of the pay disparity but that makes it even more likely. They don't want to rush into a hire that they will regret. The program has parents who are generous with their time and their opinions, so perhaps the school will ask one of them to take over as an interim volunteer coach while they sort out a longer term plan.

all good points. perhaps they put the program on hold for a year, or ask Urick to come back on short term basis until the find someone?
