I don’t think athletes should get this much preferential treatment but I also think having a teenager who wakes up at 4:00 am on a consistent basis to do a sport is very impressive. |
Our tour guide at Wes downplayed sports compared to other SLACs we toured this year. |
Historically incorrect. That is why colleges literally fly people around the US looking for athletes. |
I agree that is hateful. So you agree that there is hate for athletes. Also, can you link to a thread specifically create to hate on "geeks"? There is a "athletes suck" post every 2-3 months. |
| The athlete haters in this thread are really focused on admissions to T30 schools. Nobody is complaining their kid can’t get into U Tenn because of the football team. The population of kids that are targeted here is a tiny tiny fraction of all applicants. The athletes that are lucky enough to be admitted for the top schools are really the best of the best. Not only are the tremendous athletes (vetted through competition) but they are incredibly bright (academically strong with less hours studying). They have very tangible traits (leadership, perseverance, competitiveness, passion, time management) that you can’t discern from a kid with 1600 SAT. The athletes are an easy pick for an AO. |
No one is hating on these kids. The issue is that these are institutions of higher education, not higher foot ball or higher hockey or higher volleyball. Nothing wrong with being a good athlete but why it makes sense to prioritize that talent over other gifts when giving out higher education spots is a legitimate discussion. Why does not other county in the world do this? |
| Other countries have even more inequity than US. You wouldn’t want that. The US higher education is the envy of the world. There are many factors that drive this including sports. |
Awww, you’re cute. In the real world, your kids will be visiting my recruited Ivy athlete and now doctor for medical advice. Sorry (not) for ruining your narrative. |
I think this youth sports industrial complex creates inequity. Been at it for years. There are virtually ZERO low income families present in our particular sport. I don't know why the college tolerate that they have a huge hand in creating this huge industry which actually does the opposite of leveling the playing field. |
What about all the kids from broken families where the single parent has to work two jobs and was always too tired to read books to their kids. Where is their level playing field? They have no chance against the DCUM kids whose parents throw money into tutors and SAT prep and private schools. Should your kid not be admitted because the kid from the broken home didn’t have a fair chance? Most people focus on who is ahead but you should take a pause and look around and be grateful. |
Lol creates inequity? You mean like college? College is all about inequity. |
There are several sports that are heavily recruited and scholarship rich where the opposite is true. Have your kid play safety for a top rated high school team and see how that goes |
And that is different from academics how? It is bizarre how you think the inequitable playing field is terrible when it is in athletics but totally fine when it comes to historically redlined school districts, outside tutors, math enrichment, SAT and AP prep, etc. |
Oh come on. Some of the posts in this thread (and others on DCUM) been outright hateful. I am not remotely athletic and I can see that clearly. There are some bitter, hateful posters on this thread who clearly have issues that go far beyond college admissions. And they live in a weird resentful fantasy world. This entire thread started with OPs angry imagination too (her story is obviously untrue), and has drawn in people similar to OP who spend their time in a fugue state centered around athletic admissions. The actual facts surrounding athletic admissions don't warrant the seething unstable focus of some of these posters. |
| The athlete haters on this thread need to start a new thread targeting URMs and first generation which is really what they are really threatened by. Would be fun to see how that goes over. |
