Hayfield Football Coach Fired

Doesn’t matter since Overton isn’t coaching Lake Braddock.

You expect Overton to do his job? That’s hilarious.

That’d have been overtime since it was after school hours.

I worry for that young man. Rumor coming out of hayfield is that he can barely read.

Educated at VMI, but can’t read? I don’t believe that.

It’s gross and inappropriate to make these sorts of comments on specific teens who are still in high school. Do better.

I posted the VMI comment. I thought they were talking about the coach. However, Tech isn’t admitting any student that can barely read. Idc how good a football player they are.

That rumor is playing on racist stereotypes and is outright disgusting.

Thanks for confirming that his job is so low-paying it isn't an exempt position. So he only makes about $44K a year in the role. Yikes.

Yeah he’s poor and broke just like most coaches.

The rumor about the Lake Braddock kid? Agreed. Disgusting and wildly untrue and does nothing but play on racist stereotypes. Shame on whomever wrote it.

By the way, VT is a Power 5 program. The standards for admissions for football players are nil as long as they are AQs.

That is simply false. Most public school coaches I know are also teachers or administrators. Most head coaches of football programs I know in VA are at least 10 years in, meaning they are banking $95K+ base salary. No need to stereotype coaches just to try and build up Coach O.

Everyone is getting hung up on the football end of things and ignoring the FAR larger problem...in this day and age of school shootings, bomb threats in schools, etc. someone with literally ZERO experience in school security got hired to be essentially the director of school safety at Hayfield? Darryl Overton's prior role at Freedom (outside of coaching) was that of an office assistant and Thompson thought Overton was qualified to handle threat assessment, active school shooter safety plans, and other critical details to keep the school’s faculty, staff, and student body of about 3,100 children safe? No one else had to vet this guy for the position? That is mind-boggling to me. Get them both out ASAP.

How is Darin Thompson still in his job at Hayfield after the school board and superintendent both admitted what has gone on is unacceptable and will never happen again? 1st step should be putting the person who planned the whole thing on leave. If you do that Overton will bounce. Then the investigation can turn its efforts on whether Reid or Boyd withheld incriminating evidence from the school board and public in the spring, summer, and fall. If so, they go also!!

Really? That was his job?

Office assistant? Yes. He was a part-time office assistant at Freedom making about $23,000 a year. If you are referring to the security role, it is shockingly still his job. He is still up on the website.

Yes! This part is absolutely nuts. People worry about this to the point they argue their kids need full access to their phone at school in case something like this happens.. yet, fcps is more than happy to have an unqualified person in charge so long as they win football? Absolutely backwards priorities. Without question, safety should come before football.

I too heard that about the LB player being arrested. How was that a racist question that the poster asked if it was true?

Anonymous wrote:That latest Fairfax Times article reads like the Pentagon Papers. Actual emails and correspondence that plainly shows how shady these county government employees were. And how many “whistleblowers” were trying to sound alarm with FCPS leadership. At this point, no way to conclude anything other than willing and irresponsible lack of professional responsibility.

And “Friday Night Lies” is an all-time hall of fame headline.

Okay, I’ll agree that “Friday Night Lies” is a good one. But please stop embarrassing yourself by comparing the article to the Pentagon Papers. It’s making me think this is Asra posting. 😂

Obviously that comment was bit tongue-in-cheek - but similar in terms of actual correspondence (McNamara memos during vietnam era) showing the truth was much different than what was (and still is) being communicated via "official" channels.

This. It's ridiculous that Overton and Thompson have not been put on administrative leave yet.
