Western High School Boundary Map options (A/B/C/D)

Dixit asked Reid directly about ES, and Reid confirmed ES is off the table in the next iterations. Hopefully those impacted can breathe a sigh of relief for now...

800 students enrolled at Skyview for the fall, that's the number they just put out.

Meren is reflecting on the heartache of community and thousands affected because of the roll out.

example: now they are dropping elementary boundaries which they should not have included in the first place.

Meren is attacking superintendent for this mess.

And, now the topic is single stall bathrooms..........

As she should. Reid learned nothing from the debacle that was the county-wide review, as evidenced by their including ES changes that no one asked for or anticipated in the latest Skyview proposals. There has NEVER been an FCPS superintendent as operationally inept as this woman. She needs to be sacked.

Anderson said community was not considered enough with the consultants. Process was not good.

Sounds like barely enough to open, but School Board members are going to get slammed over this mess next year.

Only two things can happen:

1. Skyview will have to cut back even further on what it can offer to such a small group of students; or

2. The overhead and cost per student at Skyview will be through the roof compared to other high schools.

This Superintendent and School Board have made such a mess of FCPS.

800 students for two grades is like 1600 for four grades.

Quick summary of it, but they're picking it back up in late afternoon. Again, my best attempt at a summary.

• Reid wants to add another cycle of reviews
o Wants to come back with 3 scenarios again in May
o Another cycle of review again after that
o Move the board vote from June to July
o Wants to shift the focus to a feeder issue and HS focus, and don’t touch the elementary schools unless there is a feeder pattern issue until the next 5 year review
• Continuing to revise the 3 scenarios that exist, not create brand new ones
• 2,000 students is the target, not 2,500
• Consensus from the board members is the elementary schools need to be off the table in this review
• Reid confirmed they’re not going to touch elementary schools in future revisions
• 800 students are signed up for the Fall, and the board seemed pretty pleased with that
• Meren’s pissed about all of it. Specifically referenced the Fox Mill ES boundary changes.
• Some talk on future uses of the pool, trainings/certifications/etc.

That is without boundaries. I think they would have more now if the boundaries were already set. However, you do not seem to understand that once boundaries are set, there will be plenty of kids. You are assuming it is only going to be an "opt in" school. It won't. This is likely the last year of "opt in."

Good summary. I thought Meren was talking about Fox Mill Woods (Crossfield) not Fox Mill Elementary, but I had a hard time following her except for her acknowledgement of the mess this has been. She made that clear.

And this is 800 students that they've enlisted as they've been recruiting from the whole county. This is not kids opting in from only the 5 local high schools.

Would you opt in if you did not know if you would be assigned there next year? Students have younger siblings, would you want your oldest there only to find out that you were not in boundary the following year?

This could have been an easy roll out with lots of enthusiasm, but the roll out has been confusing and chaotic.

I believe Skyview will end up being a very good school, but this uncertainty has been damaging. If they had picked the scenario that made sense last Fall, things would be moving along. Now, they are reaching.

There are more than enough students who live closer to Skyview than any other high school to populate more than the 2000 seats at the school. Enrollment won't be a problem once the boundaries are set.
