She and I have both been told that if she wants a shot at playing in college, she needs to switch teams next year. And she's decided she wants to try. I'm not really a sports person myself, but people who are tell me she has a good shot at playing in college. It seems like the posters here have more of an idea about the more college-focused leagues than I do -- if there is so much turmoil about the DA and ECNL teams right now, does anyone have thoughts about how to approach the teams and coaches prior to tryouts? If all the ECNL FCV girls are heading to BRYC, for example, maybe that opens up opportunities. We had also been thinking about maybe Arlington but that seems no better an option for being seen by college coaches than our local club now that DA and ECNL don't seem to be options. Anyone have thoughts?

1)What area are you in?

2)Would you be willing to drive to Reston or Boyds 4x a week in evenings?

Thanks for the answers. I definitely plan to have her try out widely. We're near Lake Barcroft. And, in large part because she's our youngest and because she's so passionate about this, I would be willing to drive to Reston. Boyds is a bit more daunting. With all the movement, have folks heard about good coaches moving or staying in place?

If my daughter was going in the 9th grade next year and she wanted to play in college, I would keep her in ECNL....college coches will be at the ECNL showcases for the next few years until DA takes off (If it ever does...big shoes to fill and they're failing so far)

I wonder if DCUM would ever consider making us adopt user IDs to post. We could still be anonymous, but then we wouldn't have this "You weren't arguing with me, you were arguing with that other guy!" nonsense.

And we could ask for a ban whenever we see one person obviously derailing the conversation.

That idea has been discussed a lot in the Website Feedback forum, and Jeff has very good reasons for not adopting the practice. That forum makes for pretty interesting reading if you've never checked it out. You'll see that the really annoying type of people and issues we deal with here are common on other threads as well.

I'm wondering if what we need is a general "Take It Outside" sticky thread. Then anyone who is derailing any thread in any forum on DCUM with their petty spats could be directed over there.

I've apologized for my own behavior and I've recommended and created "take it outside" threads. Upon my urging someone did create the VYS thread, which is doing very well. I created the CCL thread today in hopes that those minutia discussions happen there as well. I'm no different than anyone else when I come here and want good general discussion. I'm also no different than anyone else and can react badly to being trolled simply because I have a dissenting opinion.

While occasionally snarky, I try and remain civil and respectful of others but do occasionally fail. When I see something derailing a thread I have, as stated above, tried to create a space for that discussion. Unfortunately, today, that simply led to more trolling and reposts of past discussions, a few of which I was not even a part of.

Again, I apologize to the general community.

Appreciate the apology! It's hard not to engage when you feel like you are being personally attacked.

Went to first 2006 Boys session a few weeks ago. Talent level was good, not great. There were a few kids that really stood out.

60 -80 kids per age group yesterday at girls tryouts
Girls looked to be from 4 major area clubs. Pwsi and vsa had the greater numbers

Which Club?

Our club doesn't have VDA and nobody from our A team is trying out. There is a lot of talent not doing it at the U12/13 years.

Loudoun / FCV

Don't recall seeing any CYA kids.

Most kids wore their club stuff so it was easy to tell

BRYC's town hall is a club membership meeting, not an informational session for the public as far as I know

Is VDA making offers already? Wonder if the Loudoun / FCV players that were at the VDA tryout will still show up to their own club's tryout.

It’s interesting to see what the impact of the early tryouts for the DA academies will be. Will the early tryouts result in top players joining a DA to ensure they have a spot, or will players be worried about committing to a program when there’s still so much uncertainty (especially for Spirit VA)? Will it result in very good, but not elite players, joining a DA to make sure they have a spot for next year, rather than risk losing their spot on their current team if lots of top players show up at tryouts in the Spring?

Will players be worried that committing to a DA will affect their relationship with their current team? That shouldn’t be an issue for an FCV or Loudoun girl going to FCV, or a PWSI or VSA girl going to VDA, but would a McLean player going to Spirit, or a FCV player thinking about VDA feel concerned about their playing time during the Spring?

What impact will age have on players’ decisions? It would seem the older and better you are, the more likely you’ll be to stick with ECNL, as that’s a known quality that shouldn’t change too much over the next few years. But if you’re a HS player that isn’t getting much college attention, do you go to a DA team in an attempt to improve your player resume and catch a coach’s eye? And if you’re a younger player, do you bet the DA is the long-term wave of the future so you join early and figure you can ride out the league’s growing pains, or do you take the opposite tack and stick with what you know for now and make a better-informed decision in a year or two?
