DD's team is a possession team "in development." (Hey, they're 11.) McLean didn't overwhelm with size or speed; they didn't have to. They did it with execution, taking advantage of unforced errors and making the most from what DD's team gave them. 0-2 at the half … with a bobbled keeper save converted for a score and a untimely lapse by the two defenders. The final score isn't worth mentioning.

Watching the game in real-time, McLean appeared to have excellent, on-target one-touch passing and they used the flanks to either set up crosses into the middle or pass back to the top of the penalty box for a long, hard shot (nearly all went too high or wide). I'll have to watch the video replay to see if there was something else that McLean did extremely well. There may have been a total of four or five fouls committed by both teams, from inadvertent trips and a few offside calls. A little bit of physical play here and there, but nothing over the top. DD's coach isn't a screamer and the McLean sat for the entire game, with only a few instructions that I could hear.

I think it would be interesting to see this team go up against an equally-disciplined team, or a team with a little more size and speed.

Oh yeah, a fellow parent noted that at least one former SYA Red player (a neighbor) was now playing for McLean Green. There may have been more that made the same move, but he wasn't sure.

PWSI 2008 girls Classic seems pretty dominating (some huge skilled girls - fast too) - wonder if they are truly the "B" team for that club (classic is undefeated in NCSL Division 3, while PWSI 2008 red team is in last place in Division 1).

Pwsi A team is in npl.

Didn’t you know PWSI is the team of the future? they’re expecting 6 girls to make the USWNT easily..

Ok so the teams to watch for 08 are:

FCV
McLean
Arlington
Loudoun
BRYC
VDA or their feeders

(Note some of these teams are playing up a year and not in CCL)

Is that in your order or are you just listing them arbitrarily? It was a lot easier to tell when my older DD was young. When there was only WAGS, you knew who teams played week after week. With all the leagues, teams that win a lot could just be playing inferior competition every week. Not taking away anything from any club, it's just hard to know where the best comp is.

Ye Olde Spreadsheete of 2008/U12 Girls Teams in the DMVe <== link

This update adds YouthSoccerRankings scores as of September 30th. (I may refresh GotSoccer rankings after the November tournaments.) I've tried to make some sense of the CCL standings, but please don't assume that I am close to being accurate. After all, I was too lazy to separate Championship North and Championship West divisions.

...

For anyone who is offended that I've copied-and-pasted some letters and numbers from a few public webpages into a spreadsheet and dared to sort the results, you are welcome! (:

That is great.

I think it is difficult to compare relative strength of clubs in different leagues.

I’m not sure how accurate rankings of teams that are playing up are.

Also there are individual 08s who are already on ECNL/DA rosters who might drop down to play at age next year.

That would be a good idea. They are not impactful this year.

If you look at the third tab on the spreadsheet, I've sorted all teams just by their current YouthSoccerRankings score. That's about the best you can do right now in comparing teams across different leagues/clubs … until they go head-to-head. (FWIW, the second tab is sorted by club, so you can get a sense of where teams are positioned within a particular club.)

Check out the fourth tab for tournaments and the groupings therein. That tab **may** provide some insights on how/why teams were flighted … and which ones shouldn't be as far "up" or "down" in any particular tournament.

The numbers geek in me wishes the YSR guy would publish his formula/methodology. I don't know how it works so well, but it has been pretty accurate. It won't predict blowouts or when a particular team will just fall apart against a stronger opponent, but it's been pretty good at picking winners, losers, and "virtual" ties.

A note or two that I should have posted earlier …
(1) VPL (ECNL RL) results are not being picked up by YouthSoccerRankings. Not sure why, as they've worked in prior seasons. Let's hope this doesn't turn into a CCL-like situation. (:
(2) Once this age group moves to U13, the added dynamic of ECNL and DA will be … interesting. I guess we'll all have to wait and see. Maybe this spreadsheet will only matter to those of us not in ECNL or DA then.

..

The coach for my 2008 DD sent a note to parents after watching a match/scrimmage/practice between ARL U13 DA and ARL U13 Red girls. To put it briefly, he said that the DA team basically looked like a U14 team in comparison.

Thanks for putting all of this together. I hope you are like a handicapper for a sports' book or something. I would pay for you !

What has Bryc done that makes them so awesome ? Tell me who they’ve won against in the last year.

Best 08s

McLean

Vda? choose either VSA or PWSI 2 separate identities not 1.

1.Mclean
2.Arlington Red
3.Loudoun
4.BRYC

why are people trying to throw a hat in the ring when they are irrelevant.

As a girls club they are second only to McLean in ECNL in Northern Virginia (Better overall than Loudoun and VDA).

There have been rumors that more changes may be coming to the local soccer landscape next year at the club level.

I would suggest that 08 parents should be cautious in assuming that any givin club is a stable home for their daughter going forward.

In a year pwsi and vsa top players will mostly be playing vda ecnl assuming program doesn’t fold.

McLean is a mainstay in ECNL and consistently puts teams into National finals or at least has them in high positions nationally. Arlington went from a partial to a full DA and seems to be very stable. They have a ton of kids. I think watching The St.James/ FCV situation will be very interesting too. Say what you will, TSJ has a lot of money and FCV has put some quality teams on the field. BRYC has some very good coaches and good ideas , but they seem to be sputtering in younger ages. I would think SYC may be a solid club on the rise. They seem to be energized as a club, they bled LMVSC nearly dry, and they have some 08s that shouldn't be taken lightly. They also have an abundance of field space. There are a lot of good options and, regardless how you may feel about them personally, proven coaches in the 08 age group which is as it should be. It's a really good situation for talented kids. There are other smaller clubs such as Herndon that can offer great situations in certain age groups too.

VDA has built a nice pipeline with PWSI and VSA.

McLean is always good.

BRYC is decent.

That’s it for 08s.
Anonymous
VSA is very good. I bet next year there are more VSA girls than PWSI girls playing for VDA. And they will perform well in the ECNL. That's my prediction.
