Nobody wants the elementary school boundary changes. We were not expecting those. We were only expecting high school changes.

Yes.

To be fair, I think the middle school boundary changes are acceptable in order to reflect the new high school boundaries.

For example, if Oak Hill moves to Skyview, it makes sense to change their middle school from Franklin to Carson. Likewise, if Crossfield stays at Oakton but every other kid from Carson moves to Skyview, Crossfield should be moved to Franklin.

FCPS really screwed up with how they handled Coates by pushing a bunch of those kids to Floris, which is now at capacity. I wouldn’t be surprised if some sort of those changes to McNair/Floris we see in the final two options.

Aren't they expecting additional growth in that area? I'm not familiar enough with that area, so I assumed the changes were intended to address these growth patterns. Is that not the case?
FCPS owns property off Fox Mill and Sunrise for the “Sliver Line ES”. Current CIP has engineering and design work in FY 27 and 28 with construction in 29 and 30. Who knows if that will actually happen.

Highland Oaks in one scenario.-? which scenario is this?

Scenario 1. Also part of Fair Woods on the side closer to Rt 50 as well as Kensington, and a neighborhood off of Fairfax County Parkway. These are all Navy families who are assigned to Chantilly currently HS.

I wanted to add that these communities are within a 2 mile radius currently for Chantilly HS, with Highland Oaks even being walkable. And now they could potentially be looking at an almost 8 mile trip to Oakton HS. Which doesn’t account for traffic. It’s not ok.

Agree.

With the loss of Oak Hill (likely) to Skyview, they should not need to move any additional students out of Chantilly.

I realize that Westfield will lose a lot of kids, but there is a lot of construction nearby. Seems to me, that with the exception of Cub Run/Chantilly, they should probably be okay. They have time to figure it out.

If Centreville is overcrowded, they may need to move some to Westfield.

It would have been so much better if they would go ahead and decide on Skyview and then sort out the rest.

The cub run switch will bring maybe 250 kids to Westfield. That puts Westfield around 1900 students in a building that holds 2850. Westfield will be at 2300 or bigger. It’s a much bigger building than both Chantilly and Centerville.

They did not increase cafeteria and hallways when they expanded it. It will be fine--and, once more, there is a lot of construction in the Westfield area.

I’m seeing a lot of lame rationalizations. If they seed Skyview with 1000+ kids from Westfield, some kids from other schools will need to move to Westfield, and the most obvious place to start is Centreville.

They did increase the cafeteria and added a 3 story section of the building to Westfield in the mid 2000s. With no additional mods Westfield holds 2850 and without backfilling it Westfield will drop to 1750 students. Westfield will get 500+ students at minimum from somewhere. If they don’t it’s a major waste of resources/infrastructure considering you have two much smaller buildings adjacent to them which would have 100s of more students in them that are at capacity or above. I am one of the people who will be moved there and while it’s inconvenient it’s probably why should happen.

The shouldn’t need to seed Skyview with 1,000 Westfield kids if they simply move all of Franklin Farm (including Crossfield), Fox Mill, and Oak Hill. Those plus the opt ins and maybe half the Westfield kids would be plenty.

That would actually be a really nice school.

And it would defy geography! Look at a map. No one on the north side of hwy 50 should be going to Westfield. They were only sent there because there was no other place to send them at the time. It is a terrible, awful commute.

And they only sent us to Westfield because they built Westfield larger than policy permitted, immediately expanded it, and sold off the Skyview land to the Saudis - land intended to support conversion of Carson into a secondary.

Once more: If Meren really wants to continue to support South Lakes, she needs to lobby to get rid of IB. That is what her constituents want. Most of them.

100% someone did an analysis of zip codes and there were a lot of people who live in Fox Mill and Navy zip codes -- far more than people who live in 20171.

20171 is also a Navy zip code fwiw

You are digging yourself into a hole, RIO mom. Just stop. No amount of arguing is going to make your case legitimate.

I’m not a RIO. I’m a Navy mom who was pointing out that 20171 *is* a Navy zip code. And it’s a Navy zip code that’s about to be royally screwed because of them. RIO screwed over our entire school. They’re about to FAFO.

I'm not sure what they did to screw you over? Please explain.

"Radical" only because you don't like the outcome for you. Scenario 1 is a crowd favorite over in my neck of the woods and accomplishes more of the actual goals FCPS claims to be aiming for with this whole boundary process. It's not perfect, but some minor tweaks make it the best for FCPS as a whole by far.

Bingo. Can’t believe how stupid and venal some of these folks are. A “really nice school” in their view creates a new Westfield attendance island north of Route 50 where kids at Coates and McNair get bused past Skyview on their long trip to Westfield.
