It was an embarrassing failure. They completely humiliated and discredited themselves in front of that audience.

Not if you read Fox News and its comments. Trumpies are loving it. I would not be surprised if a majority of people in that audience also agreed with what was being said. The military, including its officers, are majority pro-Trump. They might roll their eyes, but don't be shocked when they fall into line and start sending in our army to round up US citizens the way that the army rounded up US citizens during WWII. And this Supreme Court will allow it, Korematsu and all.

Yet people do not understand how much republicans and maga actually hate US citizens. They want you dead.

ROTFL!

And the non MAGA know a tin pot dictator when they see one.

PP, LOL. Ditto Hume. Ripping on Harwood demonstrates how far the Overton window has lurched to the R.

I'm impressed with the generals and admirals that had to fly in for this. They did not give Hegseth and Trump what they wanted - fawning, cheering sycophants in uniform clapping for their dear leaders. Instead, it was nothing but silence.

They were very stoic. The listened to the lectures - as they had to. But they made it deeply uncomfortable for Hegseth and Trump with their complete silence.

And looking at the pictures. Very interesting. These are American generals and admirals in their 50s and 60s. They are very good at expressing contempt - silently.

Being lectured to by a national guard f-up must of been something for these military leaders. Hegseth is a mediocre NG officer that doesn't even have a tab, which is unheard of for senior infantry officers.

For all his big talk about fitness, Hegseth was probably the only Army guy in the room without a Rangers tab. And he's definitely the only person in that room that insists on having a powder and makeup room for his public appearances.

All in all, a good show for the military. And Hegseth in particular came across as weak and pathetic as he always does. And Trump continued to do Trump things.

I think these officers felt a lot of responsibility in the moment. The mediocrity in the civilian leadership is breathtaking.

Have you ever been in a military unit? Doesn't sound like it.

I was only in JROTC, but I come from a long serving military family - every generation since the revolution - and I get what you mean.

I saw photos that were taken of the audience inside the room; stone faced or poker faced, whichever you prefer. The word on the street is that the general consensus was absolute disgust with what they heard and that they were summoned to hear it.

I’m the OP and I have to imagine the disgust these brave men (and hopefully women) felt listening to these speeches, threats made (if you don’t like what we are saying leave and see what happens) being told that hazing and instilling fear in our troops is the future of our military. Being scolded for not cheering for frump. This is shameful.

I'm sure there are some that feel as you do. Most likely approve of most, but not all of the changes. And, there are some who are all for it.

I think of someone I know on an ROTC hike/march. They had a time limit and his group was falling behind. He had to carry a female cadet's backpack because she was slowing them down. Some of what Hegseth said has value.

lol ROTC? Really? So what? There are tons of people(men and women) who join and quit ROTC. ROTC cadets actually are evaluated for 4 weeks in the summer between your junior and senior year.

Never heard of a forced march in ROTC. Maybe it was for an EIB? The final graded event is a 12-mile foot march which must be completed in three hours or less. That is not really hard to do.

I think you are trying to say women should not be in the military because they can not keep up with any male? Were you in the military? I have seen a lot of men who can not keep up with women. Specially many of the support units. It’s not like all female who are in combat roles have to pass a standardized physical test that has no gender bias. Oh wait they do!

Next you will be posting about changing ROE because killing civilians always works out well in the end. It separates the good guys(and countries) from the bad ones.

Sure, it was anecdotal. It was also true. You do know that most ROTC students get tuition and a stipend? And, yes, well aware of LDAC or whatever the current name is at Ft Lewis.
And, if you listened to the speech, Hegseth also said that there were also men who would not meet the standard.

Yes, we had a big discussion about ROE in my house today. No one is calling for NO ROE, just reasonable ones. A year or so ago, DH and his military buddies were discussing their ROE in Vietnam compared to what their kids were required in Afghanistan. There were issues then, too, with the requirements. But, lately, it has been worse.

And, there is a place in DOD for those in support roles that do not require the PT test. It is called civilian jobs.

So your family is happy that civilians and hospitals aren’t off limits anymore? Nice.

Show me where they said that.

NP — So, how do you understand Trump’s comment about using US cities as training grounds for the military?
Cities. That means civilians, right?
He’s jealous of Putin and Netanyahu.

I think you are deliberately misinterpreting what he means. Our armed forces do need real world training before they are thrown into battle. What would you prefer they do instead?

NP, explain “real world” training in the context of war? What aspect of their “training” do you see playing out on the streets of our country? Add to this the Posse Comitatus Act (look it up) and the suggestion that we use us military personnel domestically is illegal. This is just another example of glaring level of ignorance by the current administration.

As well as by a swath of DCUM readers.

They did it for their egos. Hegseth, a Major in the reserves who couldn’t be trusted to work Biden’s inauguration, got off of being able to tell every general and admiral what to do. Trump couldn’t let him get all that pleasure on his own and wanted the same. Little men.

The generals and admirals don’t take kindly to people wasting their time. They have real responsibility and take it seriously.

Their silence was professionalism. They know they shouldn’t be used for political points and they’re not playing.

I’ve been married to one (now retired) for 30 years and he has never once shared a political opinion even with me.

No one buys this sane washing anymore. The attendees were livid.

Were you there? I’ve seen a few anecdotal anonymous reports from a few attendees being unhappy but hardly anything universal. They’re not supposed to clap and cheer if that’s what you’re basing it on.

For better or worse Hegseth seems to enjoy pretty broad support among the enlisted (saying this based on both professional experience and personal connections). Many feel the top brass and political leaders are out of touch.

Of course they think this! They are 20 and don't have the intellect to be generals. Hegseth and his idea that bravado+pushups = warrior is a lot more appealing to them than the recognition that they will never be top officer material.

Exactly. What’s so shocking here is that the folks defending this event and raising how enlisted feel the top brass are out of touch demonstrates woeful ignorance of modern warfare and leadership traits. Utter failure.

Polling on vets who are elderly and watching Fox News all day is not “polling the military”

And this is just further reason that this whole circus show is in fact just that, a circus show. Two dunderheads calling in top brass to lecture them on what it takes to be a soldier, it’s absurd. The silence, stoic faces and no-reactions are what they are trained to do! And not until the commander in chief says laugh do they laugh. It’s irony at its absolute finest, it’s just sad that it’s to the countries detriment.

Yes. But the senior officers made the US look pretty solid. So at least there's that.

The army, navy, and air force can't do anything about the morons Americans choose for their politicians. They can only be professional - and so far that seems to be going ok.
