Blatant antisemitism in Philly.

And, why??? Why “protest” like this in the US? What are they hoping to accomplish?

In case anyone is interested, there is an in depth article in the Guardian about the restaurant and the protest.

Several staff were fired over violating the dress code by wearing Palestinian flag pins/colors. Several staff members also disapproved of the fundraisers the restaurant held for a charity that supports the IDF as well as paying for dinners of people that were flying to Israel to serve in the IDF.

The server who was inside the restaurant at the time of the protest thought it was peaceful and not antisemitic.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/dec/08/michael-solomonov-philadelphia-restaurant-israel-antisemitic-protest

They article doesn't change the fundamental conclusion: a Jewish restaurant owner was targeted because he's Jewish, serves falafel, and organized a fundraiser for an Israeli medical charity.

The protesters and servers come across as complete a**hats.

What are you talking about? It totally changes the conclusion. The restaurant wasn't targeted because of the owner's religion, it was targeted for its anti-Palistinian actions. And even the server who was inside the restaurant thought the protest was peaceful.

“Anti-Palestinian actions”? You mean donating to an Israeli medical charity?

Peaceful isn’t the issue. These protesters targeted the owner bc of his religion and the food he served and “charged [him] with genocide”.

This is no different than if pro Israeli protesters targeted Muslim owned restaurants.

It’s absolutely shameful conduct.

No, I mean firing people because they wore Palestine flag pins. That's discrimination. And the Israeli "charity" he donated to has killed thousands of Palestinian children.

What on earth are you talking about?

1. There was absolutely no discrimination. A uniform policy was enacted; the employees violated it. Separately, in a human level, wearing a Palestinian flag pin in front of your Jewish employer is a disgusting thing to do.

2. The charity has killed exactly no one.

This is like me publicly charging the local shawarma shop with being Hamas supporters just bc they’re Muslim and donate to MSF.

It’s outrageous and shameful.

Oh, btw, I’m a left-leaning Lutheran. This isn’t personal to me in any way except that I’m offended as an American and as a human being.

There is nothing wrong with wearing a Palestinian pin in front of a Jewish person. That is not disgusting. I do agree that it is not discrimination since it was a violation of the uniform policy.

The charity actively works with and donates to the IDF. The IDF kills lots of people, including children.

The owner actively supports Israel in this war, by donating to a charity that works with the IDF and by paying for meals for IDF soldiers. It looks like the protesters targeted the restaurant for those reasons, not because the owner is Jewish.

However, I do agree that protesting at restaurants is not helpful and should not be done.

If they had worn Israel flag pins, they would not have been fired. That is discrimination.

I cannot believe people are actually defending a mob screaming “Goldie Goldie you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide” outside of a small restaurant. Unbelievable. And I’m not Jewish.

Why is that so hard to believe? The owner actively supports the IDF, who has killed 18,000 palestinians in a matter of weeks. Some people call that genocide.

Let’s test your commitment to the bolded:

Ok to wear a Blue Lives Matter to work at your Black employer’s business the day after George Floyd was murdered?

I didn’t think so.

These people would be screaming bloody murder if Muslim owned small businesses were targeted.

The hypocrisy is staggering.

Where is the 18K number coming from? I haven’t seen that reported.

But your point stands. The owner is not being targeted because he is Jewish but protested against because of his specific actions in support of Israel’s questionable policies.

Yeah, this is ridiculous. It’s obviously hypocritical and it’s indefensible behavior from the protesters.

On a human level, it sounds like you regard Palestinians as sub-human.

Not at all.

I fundamentally object to targeting US citizens based on their ethnicity and the food they cook.

I’d be equally outraged if a Muslim-owned business were targeted and otherwise treated in this fashion.

You’ve gotten so twisted around that you don’t even know which end is up.

Remember, this conversation is about protesters targeting a US owned small business bc the owner is Jewish and cooks falafel.

It’s the protesters who failed to distinguish between a Jew in the US and the state of Israel’s actions.

Also nice that you didn’t answer the question.

I think it would be disgusting to wear a pin with the Hamas flag in front of a Jewish person.

I do not equate all Palestinians with Hamas, nor the Palestinian flag with Hamas.
