| Having grown up a hardcore Steelers fan, I now want to vomit every time I see that dog torturer. Not that Big Ben was a peach, but Vick was convicted. Just bc he served his time we should all move on? |
|
I'm in Pittsburgh, where there is plenty of outrage about Vick. There have been protests at Heinz Field at home games and practices. Organizations/corporations that might have rented Heinz Field for other events have taken it off their list in protest. Some of the actual protests, ie individuals with signs outside of the stadium is dying down, but I think that's just the natural course of events. It's hard to sustain that level of protest long term. And then there are those who aren't protesting but saddened by a team that they view as no longer representing their values. It was one thing with Ben - I think he was viewed as a bad apple - but with this hire people (like yourself) are questioning whether the culture of the organization has changed.
Your question about whether we all just move on is a good one and I don't know the answer but I suspect it's why we haven't seen more media coverage of the controversy. People are well are of his crime. He did his time. What else can they say? |
| I'm a native of Baltimore. I remember plenty of outrage about Vick in the past and even now. |
|
The real question is why was there more outrage about Vick than Roethlisburger? A combination of racism and misogyny. People are harder on the black guy, and not as hard on the rapist because "women make things up against rich/famous people."
Vick has paid his dues. What he did made me sick, but he's done his time in prison. It's over. |
| I abandoned my beloved Eagles when they signed Vick. He did his time and deserved to play again. But, still didn't want him on our team. |
It's not about race. Big Ben has won superbowls. Vick has not. Ray Lewis killed someone and we all love him. |
It was, in a way, though. "We" expect football players or other huge angry men who hit people for a living to hit women and hurt people. It's so common that "we" have come to accept it. It plays right into every stereotype we have about big bad boys and black men. But hurt a DOGGIE? Man's best friend? *MINDS BLOW* And I don't know where the heck the OP was. People nearly went insane when he was reinstated. I was in Philly then and the protests were huge. Personally I'm like the op I quoted. He did his time, he complied, let a man move on. Turn your fury where it belongs. Frankly dog<woman, every time. I can't even believe that I had to type that out. |

There was outrage and now unfortunately the pitbull no euthanasia movement has affected the general public. Many are clueless and others have some degree of lion tamer complex.

Did anyone reading these boards ever see a dog attack on a person or animal? One comment has the term the "new normal" for dogs for basic expectations: https://mountainx.com/opinion/letter-writer-pit-bulls-should-be-allowed-to-go-extinct/ Vick and his pitbull breed involvement have created another problem. New normal is leash aggression, perplexing attacks /deaths when instinct kicks in... Pit people might not lie this but the link below details how nice shelter dogs are used as bait dogs in behavior assessment for the intakes: http://www.animals24-7.org/2015/09/30/what-is-the-austin-animal-center-doing-to-dogs-in-the-name-of-play/ So they use a nice dog and it gets traumatized. |
| OP here, don't get me wrong, the violence against women perpetuated by athletes is repulsive, and we could go case by case but I don't really want too. I'm an animal lover, that's what's in my heart, so that is what I am focussed on here in the pets forum. Anyway I am not currently in the U.S. I was able to watch my first football game today and was like ew. Glad, so glad to hear outrage in Pittsburgh. I didn't get that vibe just bc none of my friends on social media have said anything. They are all like "Go Steelers!" For me, it's like yeah he paid his dues. But I can't forgive and forget what he did, and I can't enjoy watching the team as a result. |
Maybe because dogs don't lie about being fought. |

As a former Hokie and a dog lover myself I was appalled, shocked, saddened and angered by the callous abuse that Michael Vick participated in. He deserved to go to jail for it and he did.
That said, the man did his time and he maintained his ability to play. So he is back playing. I am not a fan of his to say the least. I would never watch a game simply because he was playing in it. But I am not going to blow off an entire team because he his on it. He's an a-hole but he is also a talented football player. I'd much rather him spend his time playing football than developing some other unsavory "hobby". |
|
There was a TON of anger about Vick coming back. It was years ago at this point.
Adrian Peterson is back playing also, where is the outrage?
Not a good comparison at all since Roethlisburger, although I have no doubt is an asshole, has never been convicted of anything to my knowledge. |
|
Karma cometh: Vick wasted his athletic youth and can't complete a pass when his professional life depends on it.
|
Then he will fade to the background and his career will end. No need to protest about him playing. Why give him that kind of attention? |
Ben the rapist and Vick the dog killer. And you're more worried about Vick? |
