What is the Test for Highly Gifted Program Like?

Anonymous
My son is in 3rd grade and I'd like him to take this test for placement. Is there any overview available for prospective test takers that describes the test's basic format? TIA.

My DD said it was puzzles..

They try to keep it secret but it sounds like it's very similar to the Cogat.

There is a verbal section (analogies and the like)
Math (a lot of patterns)
and non-verbal (this is probably the puzzles pp referred to) - things like imaging punching holes in a folded paper and then identifying which of the answers is what the paper would look like unfolded.

The test is very time pressured for many students so even if your child can answer the questions she or he needs to be able to do so quickly

According to MCPS, any student in 3rd grade will be able to solve the questions. While this may be true for Math, the truth is that the student who gets in is the one who can solve these problems with speed and accuracy.

Then there is the Raven portion of the test, that a lot of kids score poorly in. Please do some practice Raven tests with your child. Google it.

Finally, English is mainly analogies and vocabulary. Cat is to mammal as Parrot is to ....

No, the Raven is for the test for the middle-school magnet, not the elementary-school magnet.

Do people prepare their kids for the gt test around here?

The math section is difficult. MCPS does not say most kids can solve the problems. They are hard.

Some do and some don't. There are test prep companies, private tutors, workbooks etc.

IMO, MCPS curriculum 2.0 has actually resulted in a lowering of curriculum standards in many schools (including the HGC and magnet programs), so now many more parents who would not have thought about leaving their home schools want to send their kids to HGC and magnet.

Many do.

OP here. Thanks. I don't want to overwhelm my son if it's too difficult. So I just wanted a general overview. I think the timed element will probably do him in.

Does anyone have tutor company recommendations specifically for HGC test prep?
