But her father, who died in TX in 1982, had like 4k in funds. That one we tried to do. I sent in his death certificate, my mom's birth certificate, a copy of his will and trust, letters testamentary naming my mother as the executor, you name it. They still wanted more, the actual probate records. Then my mom died while waiting. and now I've sent in all her documents. The thing they still want is a notarized affadavit of someone who can attest to knowing my grandfather and that he only had one child, my mother. He was born in 1899! Everyone he knew who knew him is DEAD. So, this money has been sitting there for almost 50 years, no interest in tx btw, and I've supplied a massive trove of documents (including a couple published sources on my grandfather which speak to his family, including his wife and only child) and I still can't get it.

Sigh.

I don't totally understand this. If he died in 1982, surely there are lots of people alive who knew him? None of your mother's friends or cousins are still alive? None of your friends ever met your grandfather?

I did this per another thread on here for MD about 2+ months ago and haven't heard anything.

So, I filled out a claim form about a month ago and today I got a check for $125.

I mean, it's not gonna make me a millionaire, but i can put that to use this week.

If you haven't checked out the unclaimed property sites, they're really good. Just make sure you're using the official one and not some third party site that will charge you a finder's fee.

Here's Virginia's: https://www.vamoneysearch.gov/

Here's Maryland's: https://www.unclaimed-property.marylandcomptroller.gov/

Here's DC's: https://unclaimedproperty.dc.gov/

Thanks for the nudge op.. I received my $412 yesterday.

I did this recently in DC and I had multiple entries. Based on minimum value of each, and assuming I get all of them, I'll be getting over $1200. Woohoo!

They may have been doing that budget billing and overpaid Pepco and have an abandoned bank account

Might be worth it to split the pot with an attorney. Or get another relative or someone extremely elderly to make an affidavit.

To pp having trouble proving her grandfather only had one child - perhaps you could use old census listings of the family. You can research these on familysearch.org
Which is a free resource sponsored by the Mormon church. Or, you could find these on ancestry.com if you or a friend has paid access. You could also use sources such as newspapers.com to look for the obituary which would usually list all children. Hopefully, they would accept these sources.

You check heirs

How do I get a 40 year old obituary from the newspaper?

Newspapers.com. See if your public library has a subscription. Or do a trial but cancel immediately.

You should try to get a will and death certificates for them.

Basically you need to prove you are the heir.

Read the rules on the site and call and ask.
