Have you tried writing the head of the treasury and/or your congressperson. Or maybe some MAGA TX state legislator who doesn't believe the government should get people's money? |
What’s the harm in claiming it if there’s a reasonable chance it could be yours? Why let the government keep it? And clearly they are not trying to find the rightful owners. DH and I file taxes every year so they know where we live, yet I found a handful of different payments that are due to us. |
Does the TX government have an ombudsman? Might try there. |
| My name is common and there were several of them. I might have tried to claim one that isn't mine. Could I get in trouble for that? I assume they will match records. |
Fraud is a crime. |
They will match against your complete name and SSN. It is not fraud to put in a claim for an ambiguous listing. The DC listing is just a first initial and last name, so one could plausibly put in a claim thinking it is perhaps themselves but be mistaken. |
You will need to provide some kind of proof. When I got my money back it was from NY State for bearer bond coupons that I was 3 years late in cashing. Because banks no longer knew how to do the cashing. I actually had the coupons in my possession. So I sent Xeroxes of them and got my money. The bond issuers' payment bank was legally required to turn the not paid out money to the state after a few years or so. They didn't have any contact information for me because it was a bearer bond (cash-like without any registration - such bonds are from olden times and are obsolete now). |
| I just found unclaimed money for me at my old address in Pittsburgh... from 30 years ago! Amazing. I'm sure it's like $25, lol, but I put in my claim. |
| If you find dead grandparents money on there how do you claim it? |
| Found over 1400 for my daughter |
You check heirs |
| Let my BIL know he had a few bucks waiting for him! 😂 |

I opened a bank safe deposit box when I was getting divorced and used my dad's address (where I grew up), so any correspondence would come to his address.
Well, after a year or two, I forgot to make the yearly payment and the bank ended up sending the *contents* of the box to the state. I found it on one of these sites. But to claim it, I need to show proof that I lived at that address. Dad sold the house before he died, and I don't know how to show my name is attached to that address. But I still have the key! I don't think I left any cash in there, but I'd still like to get my personal documents back. After I found this, I looked up every family member and over half had money listed. |
You used his address so any correspondence would be sent to his address, so any chance you have an electronic record of something being sent there in email? Your cell phone bill maybe? |
I only used his address for the bank box, not my regular bills. And I moved out at 18, so I never had any accounts using this address. But thanks for the tip to check emails - maybe the bank emailed me something and listed his address. I just checked my dad's name on the Virginia link (he lived there in 1972) and he has $500! But I closed out his estate through the courts (1 unresponsive sibling who refused to sign off), and I don't want to open a can of worms. So I guess the $500 will just sit there forever! |
