Does anyone follow Dr. Peter Attia?

Of all the Epstein “revelations”, this one is the most fascinating to me. I’ve listened to his podcast for a few years, and found him to be sensible. Not too over the top, maybe even a little boring with his long podcasts that get way into the weeds sometimes.

But recently he’s been going through the Rogan/Tech Bro transformation with the shirts getting tighter and tighter, the native warrior arm tattoos, the $50K wrist watches. I thought mid-life crisis, but whoa I didn’t know he hadn't finished medical residency, that he was worked at McKinsey, that he had left his wife alone as she was in the hospital with their one-month old who nearly died and she performed CPR, and we find out not only was he a douche for that, but it was to stay in NY to meet up with Epstein. And of course the crude, immature emails.

But I did not have him on my Who Will Be in the Epstein Files bingo card at all. Which I guess is why I’m eating all of this up.

Agreed. His book also seems generally sensible. He explains the research that drives his recommendations, some of which are just very sensible things to do and not unique to Attia. Other recommendations are not practical for the vast majority of people and seem designed to promote a model of care that he financially benefits from. But his explanations of the research have been helpful for me as a layperson.

I have loved some of his interviews, and others I found too technical. I also sometimes got a whiff of him sometimes steamrolling over his female guests, interrupting them, but he definitely also listened to them and I appreciated hearing their voices, especially about women's health. Another thing I noticed is his podcast guests have been 95% White, and his book doesn't address health disparities by race in any significant way. He doesn't strike me as a MAGA racist but my guess is he just doesn't think race matters, he probably "doesn't see race".

What is tricky about him is his whole approach makes some promises about extending lifespan and healthspan that can be very attractive to people and they get very engrossed in following his lifestyle, which is not proven to do what he promises. I think it can be dangerous to be fixated on this because he says a lot of sensible things and then he recommends things that are less sensible. The sensible things give credibility to the non sensible things. And that's where I get the snake oil salesman vibe.

When I heard the revelations, I was shocked, but it was like an "ooooh.... this is what I was sensing about him". He's someone trying to be a good guy, but clearly has a lot of issues.

Yep, same. I’ve listened to his podcast off & on for a few years now. His voice conveys maturity, expertise, professionalism. When you see pics of him, it’s surprising because the voice does not match his muscled bro douche vibe.

It’s another lesson that you must be weary of all. We don’t know anything about anyone.

I found his comment that “was ashamed” to be particularly shallow. He was ashamed to be caught. I doubt felt shame beforehand.

Same as others. I have seen and read some attia content over the year, but recently it’s just become too much. Like when he interviewed Pogacar (best cyclist on the planet now) and it was just cringe.

Much of what he says is common sense anyway. I do think he started an unfortunate movement of bros and brodettes trying to optimize everything way too much. Not to mention a lot of these people are doing unsustainable things they hate for longevity which seems really awful.

The comments about prostitutes' bodies being low-carb are truly disgusting. Hopefully his long suffering wife ends things and none of his female collaborators work with him again.

Is that what the p stands for? I don’t think so.

You're right, it stands for the specific body part of women that Trump likes to grab.

Many people think he is crazy.

Yup

What is interesting is that based on what I recall from this part of the book, him hanging out with Epstein while his son was so sick is both horrible and totally consistent with how he describes himself at that time in his book. It was soon after this episode that he went to residential treatment for the first time (voluntarily) as his wife told him they were basically better off with him in the state that he was. Describes his anger issues that stem from being abused as a child and being in a horrible place emotionally. But even later in the chapter after his second round of residential treatment he describes how his wife made him promise to spend at least 1 day a week with his family, and how one time he almost didn't do it but how good it felt when he actually did. As a working mom of one child I can't imagine putting up with this BS, especially with someone who spends so much time in freaking Zone 2.

I am glad Attia has worked on his anger issues, but it is clear there is something deeply damaged about him still. I find it completely implausible that he was unaware that Epstein already had a child prostitution conviction at the time they were friends. I find it more plausible that Attia knew at least some if not the full extend of what was going on and participated in it.

This one hits different for me, too. I thought of him as someone with demons, who was abused as a child and struggled and keeps trying to heal. I empathized with that and commended his self-reflection. I don't care about the snake oil stuff because I think he and his ilk actually share a lot of valuable information, especially for those of us with metabolic issues who have been led astray by traditional medical recommendations for decades...

BUT these messages show he thinks of women as trash. He is a misogynist and lacks basic morality, sucking up to someone like Epstein.

I mean I think sometimes this is how abusers get to to people. He does come across as very sympathetic in his book, which is very well written and compelling. Abusers often use the whole "I'm working on myself, look how self aware I am" stance to stop people from leaving them

So many hucksters. Why do people not see through all of these people?

Most people who get sucked into stuff like this (snake oil salesmen, abusers, cults) didn't think they'd ever fall for it either. The shame of falling for it is one aspect of why it is hard for many people to escape.

With this news, I no longer wonder why so many white men and women are split on how they vote. It is so enlightening, in an unfortunate way. Have wondered why this administration still has 40-40% support. Hopefully this will break the dam when more people realize what they've been erroneously supporting all this time.

Yes, and remember that most celebrity books are ghostwritten. The ghost writer can amp up the pathos and create a likeable character. He also is super busy and consumed with his health regime. He did not devote time to the physical act of writing a book.
