As I understand it, the main potential of the "work of being royal" is that you can make change by bringing social issues to the forefront. The model of this being Diana, who really did make a change by touching patients with AIDS and leprosy, and her work on landmines. But with the British press so insanely vindictive and obsessive about ANYTHING Meghan did in public (human rights abusing avocados! she crossed her legs wrong for 5 seconds!), this make her work as a royal basically impossible to fulfill. The press turned it into a zoo, designed to distract from whatever she actually did. I think the most bitter stakeholders here ought to be Britons of color, who lost the chance to see a multiracial face of England.

DP. British press/tabloids are different than here in the US. I'm aware of that but mostly get my news about the royals here and from an occasional picture on a tabloid at the checkout line, next to the pictures of aliens, celebrities getting married or divorced or gaining weight or losing weight. That stuff is fluff.

So my opinion of the royals has not been created by the British press, it's mostly from pics and from official statements. I come across an occasional rumor but I put as much weight to it as I do other rumors, it could be accurate or it could be totally false.

Harry and Meghan have behaved horribly in their public handling of this. It would be much easier to forgive if they were both 20 but they're both in their late 30s. Acting like dumb teenagers.

Everything you see in the "non-British" press has been picked up second hand from the British press. The British press is the filter through which you receive all your information about them.

The statements from Buckingham Palace are not filtered. Neither are pics showing Meghan or Kate wearing a cute dress, which is the level of my interest in them. Neither are their current physical locations.

You are reading this thread, which is filled with the false information and biased framing picked up and repeated from those tabloids.

The media did not manufacture their announcement (i.e. brand rollout), interviews, speeches. I have never followed them, other than see pictures of the wedding, but it’s not difficult to see that their self undoing is all of their own.

Yes. Kate does it with mental health and early childhood development. Her own brother has struggled severely with depression. She also knows both Harry and William struggled after their mother's death.

If somebody allowed me to represent charities I felt passionate about--I would love it. Much more than my desk job.

What I read is they wanted to get rich on their own. But, the way they planned to do that was using the Royal name. They wanted to break off, but still be supported financially and use their titles. Wth kind of deal is that for the monarchy? That plan was all one-sided in their favor. I really don't think this plan was thoroughly planned. They gambled and lost. They probably thought that if they pulled this trick the Queen would have no choice but to go along with all of their demands. I do not know what ever possessed them to think that.
