It really does come down to the royal rota. As long as they're working royals, they are forced to work exclusively with a small group of papers, half of whom have a financial incentive to tear down Harry and Meghan's reputations. It's that simple.

Now they just have to deal with the disciplined and scrupulous North American paparazzi.

Not much to miss with less than 2 years as a full-time royal. Compared to the other royals, she was fresh and different. Away from them she has to stack up next to other actors and established celebrities.

Plus, everyone will always blame her for pulling a Yoko and dragging poor Harry away from his family.

Imagine if M had dressed in J Crew or the British equivalent (think: Michelle Obama), posted her own pics of her baby (think: Kate), occasionally done some charity work, ventured out in jeans to shop at regular stores (again: Kate), done the occasional trip to Africa to support H’s causes (think: Diana), etc. she would have been beloved—and even more popular than Kate and Wm.

She wore jeans to an event and the press mocked her.

Who cares? She was a Royal, a position from which she could never be fired. Look at Camilla, she gives the press the figurative middle finger.

I’d care if I were her. I wasn’t put on this earth to grit my teeth and never get fired. Or to watch my kids be compared to primates. Like she said, she doesn’t just want to survive, she wants the kids to be happy.

*she wants to be happy

Nothing wrong with wanting to be happy.

The secret is to ignore the haters. Don’t read the tabloids.

Harry is known to read the tabloids. His anger is self-inflicted. If he’s reading it, I’m sure Meghan is as well. And that’s just bizarre. Most A listers publicly state they don’t read the tabloids. I’m sure their agents do, but they personally don’t. Ignorance is bliss.

wow, thanks for this! enlightening. I feel like Harry and Meghan were in an impossible double bind. As I understand it, the main potential of the "work of being royal" is that you can make change by bringing social issues to the forefront. The model of this being Diana, who really did make a change by touching patients with AIDS and leprosy, and her work on landmines. But with the British press so insanely vindictive and obsessive about ANYTHING Meghan did in public (human rights abusing avocados! she crossed her legs wrong for 5 seconds!), this make her work as a royal basically impossible to fulfill. The press turned it into a zoo, designed to distract from whatever she actually did. I think the most bitter stakeholders here ought to be Britons of color, who lost the chance to see a multiracial face of England.

DP. British press/tabloids are different than here in the US. I'm aware of that but mostly get my news about the royals here and from an occasional picture on a tabloid at the checkout line, next to the pictures of aliens, celebrities getting married or divorced or gaining weight or losing weight. That stuff is fluff.

So my opinion of the royals has not been created by the British press, it's mostly from pics and from official statements. I come across an occasional rumor but I put as much weight to it as I do other rumors, it could be accurate or it could be totally false.

Harry and Meghan have behaved horribly in their public handling of this. It would be much easier to forgive if they were both 20 but they're both in their late 30s. Acting like dumb teenagers.

Everything you see in the "non-British" press has been picked up second hand from the British press. The British press is the filter through which you receive all your information about them.

Of course that is not the only reason for their decision.

The statements from Buckingham Palace are not filtered. Neither are pics showing Meghan or Kate wearing a cute dress, which is the level of my interest in them. Neither are their current physical locations.

Is somebody comparing the way Brad was duped by Angelina to the way Harry was duped by Meghan? I could see that. Both not so bright men that were p*ssy-whipped and not thinking with their tiny brains. And, two women that see themselves as Mother Theresa and that everyone would side with them. In fact, that is a perfect analogy. That plan did not work out so well for Angelina. She got much bad press and came off as the bad one. People are now patting Brad on the back for getting out from under crazy narcissist. Angelina cut him off from all of his friends. None of them liked her. In fact, they all ended up going over to 'Team Jen'.

Someone dared to say Jen was more popular than Meghan, lol.

Jen is not like MeAgain

You’re right. She’s an aging starlet desperate to take her no good ex back.

First pps trash the Queen and now Jen Aniston, who happens to be one of the nicest people in Hollywood.

How is the truth trashing? And if you know her personally why are you wasting time here.

DUH. Angelina was the one being trashed. She was compared to doing what Meghan did to Harry. Jen was the innocent victim.

Then she is ill fit for a public role. Heck, even in the private sector you have to grow a tough skin and brush off your detractors and enemies. Michelle Obama brushed off some of the worst press I have ever seen, for a job she didn’t even want to begin with, and focused on doing a fabulous job. Never complained, never explained, never thought if herself as a victim. That’s what makes the Obamas so extremely popular.

It's is M Obama's mantra:

"When they go low, you go high."

She would never give them the pleasure of addressing their mean and untrue comments. Nothing pisses ppl off than to see they aren't getting under your skin.

I hope Meghan does something new with her hair now that she doesn’t have to work for the BRF.

Oh yeah I’m sure if MM had accused the Rota of “going low” and said everything else Michelle has about her critics everyone would be chill about it.

Study up on Keanu Reeves. He’s beloved because he’s always come off like he isn’t impressed by Hollywood, isn’t trying to be rich or famous, keeps a low profile aside from promoting a film, etc. People love him because he seems cool and normal. Nobody thinks he’s selfish or greedy.

Try that.

Keanu is an A-list actor. His movies are BLOCKBUSTERS. He IS rich and famous!

We know, dummy.

But he doesn’t come off that way. Nobody thinks of him as a sellout. He keeps a low profile. He dresses down.

H&M are the complete opposite of Keanu. They’re media-seeking Kardashian clones.

They think they are perfect the way they are, dummy.

And that’s fine. They don’t need to change.

But we don’t need to like them. We can judge them for their words and actions. We can believe they are self-absorbed, lack awareness of their privilege and wealth, are greedy and pathetic for pursuing even greater wealth, etc. We don’t need to admire them. They aren’t noble.

And we aren’t racist for believing this. I feel the same way about the Kardashians (who are white BTW; someone in this thread made a comment that they are black).

The comment was that they mostly date black men. A fact that angers some whites.

And angers a lot of black women.

Whatever happened to the keep calm and carry on the British are supposed to be famous for?

I do think that if Meghan had just kept calm, ignored the presses and just carried on, all the intense attention in her would have eventually calmed down. As a very high profile person in a high profile role she was always going to attract the nasty people and comments. Just don't read the papers and ignore the online abuse from the wackos. And she did make mistakes early on in how to present herself publicly, as the British have a narrow range of tolerance for what royals can do while remaining strictly neutral and not giving off too much an impression of privilege, but that would have been allowed if she'd learned from it and moved on.

For some reason she and Harry aren't able to do that. And because of it, they can't apparently function well in their expected roles. But I also suspect this is only half the story. I do think Meghan saw a lifetime of boring duty ahead of her and realized she didn't want to be opening hospitals and sitting on charity boards forever, and always playing second fiddle to Kate. It's a gilded cage for sure. For a self-made and successful actress, it must have felt very limiting. She had no interest being the POC version of the Countess of Wessex.

But the big problem is that you can't be royal and also be actively pursuing your own way or career. It's one or the other. Even leaving the royal family in this manner, (badly done IMHO) doesn't guarantee a successful separation. It will always be very hard for Harry and Meghan to not have the stigma of royalty or the titles overriding anything else they do, because what they do will be because of their royal status.

That's why I think they will divorce. Meghan and Harry will finally understand this but approach it differently, Harry will want to retreat away from a commercial life and back into a private world that, in its own way, can only really happen if he remains loyal to the royal status even if he doesn't resume duties (effectively going underground, living discreetly and privately, made easier that the older he is the less interest the press will have in him). But Meghan won't want that. She wants the starlight, the hollywood glamor, the red carpets, the celebrity friends and glitz and glamour, which she was already part of before meeting Harry and sees as part of her identity and future. And she can work within that world. She's likely good at it. Maybe never the true A list level like Julia Roberts but I don't doubt she'd had a pretty successful career and life as a b-list actress. They will grow apart and finally divorce.
