"Media reports anout the Empire incident being a hoax are unconfirmed by case detectives. Supt Eddie Johnson has contacted @ABC7Chicago to state on the record that we have no evidence to support their reporting and their supposed CPD sources are uninformed and inaccurate."

I have no idea whether Smollett's claims are true or false. But, at this moment, the title of this thread has not been proven inaccurate.

It seems pretty far-fetched to me but the Chicago police still seem to be taking it seriously. I don't see any reason for me -- or you -- to second guess those doing the actual investigation. This doesn't seem all that complicated to me.

A report from Fox 32 in Chicago states that police have evidence that the two men arrested bought the rope that was found around Smollett's neck. It was purchased at a local Ace Hardware store. And, that when presented with that evidence, the two agreed to cooperate with police.

Cute how MAGAers are literally pushing for this story to be false to validate their feelings.

Black folks were skeptical from the beginning. If anything, it was mostly liberal whites who actually ran with it.

PP and I actually agree w/ this. My DWs family (AA) were skeptical from the jump. Mainly b/c he looked too pretty based on the description of what happened to him. They did however think it was terrible, if true and didn’t jump to politics conspiracies. The only ppl taking the political angle that I know are conservative media outlets and MAGAers who are mad MAGA was brought up in the allegation. MAGAers seem confused that ppl would accept a racist homophobic attack allegation from their group when its SOP in the daily rhetoric of their leaders.

whether Smollett made up the story after police threatened to charge them with battery. The brothers attorney said both brothers knew Smollett. There are unconfirmed reports that Smollett paid the two brothers to perform the alleged scheme. (2/2).

Let's say that police do have evidence that the brothers bought the rope and that they have confessed to doing this - at the direction of Smollett. And, let's say that Smollett paid them for their participation as unconfirmed reports have stated.

Smollett is not going to confess to this. He will say that these two did this on their own.

What evidence do the police have that convinces them that Smollett directed the brothers to do this?

Phone records showing phone calls to the brothers just before/after the attack?
Evidence of payment? If so, what?
What else could they have?

In addition to phone calls, there could potentially be texts or emails. If Smollett really organized this, his boyfriend probably has a t-shirt saying, "I'm with stupid".

My guess

1. Nigerian brothers have flipped--they apparently are talking to save their own necks. Pretty sure that is a fact.
2. Possibility: money exchanged--they took a trip to Nigeria right after the attack--that's probably expensive
3. Possibility: phone logs
4. It defies reality to think --after seeing those pics--that those guys could have failed in their "attack". If they had really wanted to hurt him, they could have.
It also does not make sense that they would have yelled "MAGA Country"

I guess it is possible that the manager set this up--and not Smollett--the MAGA accusations did come later--but,my vote is for a joint effort.

He was awfully protective of his phone.
