Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Franklin Farm is a large neighborhood and different people have different opinions. Though you wouldn’t know that based on what some people are saying, trying to present the neighborhood as a monolith “rooted in Oakton”. |
People keep saying that. And FCPS uses the “there’s no kids in apartments” math when permits are issued. But that’s just not what is happening in reality. Multigenerational households are in any configuration. Housing is expensive and people can’t afford to move so there are lots of kids in every development. See: Discovery Square. |
| Sounds like both Oakton and South Lakes could both use some relief. Option D it is then! And watch Crossfield parents turn on their friends who get to stay at Oakton. |
+1 I don't live there, but I've stopped there for a school bus to unload. Packed. |
| Franklin farm is so big. Why franklin farm does not go to oak hill which is within franklin farm. Crossfield looks pretty far from franklin farm. Just curious. All these school zoning does not make any sense to me. |

Anybody from non Franklin farm want to go to the new school?
Anybody from Franklin farm want to stay in Oakton? With franklin farm being so big, it is expected that people will have different opinions even with franklin farm. PP should identify themselves as franklin farm, or non franklin farm instead to differentiate themselves sonthey can gonto the new high school. |
There are a thousand houses in Franklin Farm. Lots of different opinions. |
Yes, we know, you're the person in Folkstone who claims she lives much, much closer to Oakton High School (which is not even in the town of Oakton) than to KAA. Guess what? I mapped out the edges of the Crossfield Boundary to both schools and the closest house to Oakton is STILL further away from Oakton than it is to KAA. Only by a little over than a mile, so I'll give you that. HOWEVER - the closest house to KAA is 2 miles from KAA and 10 miles from Oakton HS. Meanwhile the closest house zoned to Fox Mill and South Lakes is 3 miles from SLHS and 4.2 miles to KAA. |
Yes townhouses, not condos. |
Honestly, my point here was more to focus on that this person's property value is not tied to being zoned to Oakton HS, it's tied to its location. |
Sounds like county finally did one correct zoning: zone fox mill under south lake high. Then fox mill should not be affected by this nwhs rezoning. Fox Mill should stay in SLHS. |
Don't live in folkstone, but you can have a shorter travel time to Oakton than to KAA. Also some might notice that it is possible to be districted to Crossfield but be closer to Navy! (I'm looking at you 12417 English Garden Ct!!!) School borders can get kinda wierd. FYI having to wait multiple traffic lights to cross 7100/286 doesn't help the time calculation due to traffic density. Go cougars! |
I always thought it was weird that the part of Franklin Farm that is a straight shot down Thompson to Navy (Tuckaway, etc.) is zoned to Crossfield while Nestlewood/Rounding Run/etc are zoned to Navy. |
I grew up there, they tried to move us to Navy but the neighborhood fought it because we already got moved from Oak Hill to Crossfield when it opened. So instead Nestlewood/Rounding Run got moved to Navy and thus the Navy Island was created. Dating myself here but it would’ve been about 35ish years ago. |
Actually, the closest house zoned to Fox Mill is only 1.8 miles to KAA. That same house is 4.8 miles to SLHS |
