Why was Emilia Perez getting so much praise? I tried watching and it was cringe-worthy. |
NP. Seems like she’s gotten pretty far. |
She is fantastic in Euphoria! |
I’m very middle aged and find Zendaya charming. I never watched her in Euphoria and didn’t see Challengers but she wa very good in the Spiderman movies and also good in Dune. She has a natural charm and the camera loves her, which goes a long way. I guess we’ll see if she ever gets a really gritty role that doesn’t require her to be charming/beautiful. Sometimes it takes a really extreme toll for people to notice that a beautiful woman can actually act — like Halle Berry in Monsters Ball or Charlize Theron in Monster. (Incidentally, speaking of Demi — GI Jane was supposed to be that role for Demi but it sort of flopped.) |
She's good in Challengers and it's not a nothing role. I am struggling to identify other actresses of her generation I like more. Elle Fanning is a great actress but she has a narrow range. I (and a lot of other people) fine Anya Taylor-Joy grating in a lot of things. Millie Bobbie Brown doesn't seem that interested in acting -- what is she even doing these days? I love Pauline Chalamet but she has no film work to speak of (I know her from Sex Lives of College Girls) and she's more of a comedic actresses. Maybe Maude Apatow? I think Sydney Sweeney is an exceedingly mediocre actor, I think her stardom is entirely about her looks. I like Hailee Steinfeld but she's another one who doesn't seem that interested in acting right now -- the only thing I can think of her doing lately is that Marvel show with the Hawkeye character. Selena Gomez is a bit older but same generation and I find her flat affect and vocal tics too distracting to make her particularly versatile (I have not seen Emilia Perez yet). In general I think there are more men in this crop who are serious acting talents. Chalamet, Tom Holland, Finn Wolfhard. Slightly older but Nicholous Hoult and Miles Teller are in the mix for a lot of the same roles at this point. I don't know why there are fewer women in this upcoming generation who seem really focused on acting specifically. Maybe there are just fewer roles available, maybe younger performers don't view acting as the best use of their efforts if they want a career with longevity (I see the merit in exploring music and branding in terms of just making money and investing in something less subject to the whims of a handful of directors/producers). |
I think the next Dune installment will focus on her character. Not exactly a gritty role but would test her ability to carry a major franchise if she winds up the focus over Chalamet. The fact that she did Challengers indicates she's interested in doing small films and working with more inventive directors, which should lead to more chances for her to stretch acting-wise. It worked out pretty well for Emma Stone (even though I actually hate her work with Yorgos Lanthimos and really wish she'd stop making those movies and do something else). |
Pretty far. But now she needs to act. This isn’t Americas Next Top Model. |
Oh just thought of a peer who is a serious actress: Margaret Qualley. But I wouldn't say she's a significantly better actor than Zendaya. Very different quality, they probably aren't up for many of the same roles. But that's problem her biggest peer at the moment and I do think she's very talented. |
Did you see Challengers? She acts in that movie. The other two lead actors are really phenomenal and she holds her own with them, too. |
She…is already acting. In all of the roles she’s being cast in. Are you unfamiliar with her? |
Two Emmy awards and a Golden Globe, plus nominations, and working with top-tier filmmakers. She's way ahead of her peers. I think she's solid not exceptional, agree with PP she has little competition. Except for Saoirse Ronan, who is only two years older than her, but reads as more mature. Same with Florence Pugh, who is only one year older. I don't think Zendaya is in their league, at least not yet. Sophie Thatcher of Yellowjackets is one to watch, but can't really think of anyone else. Julia Garner, but she hasn't done much since Ozark. |
Her acceptance award was amazing. |
speech omg I need to get some coffee |
? What does this even mean? Are you Chris Rock or Will Smith? |
I haven't watched it yet -- the musical element is off-putting to me. I saw everything in the Comedy/Musical category except Emilia Perez and Wicked and really liked all of them. Zoe Saldana was annoying at the ceremony last night. I thought it was so obnoxious for her to run up on stage to give the award for, I think, foreign language film? It wasn't her moment, she could have sat in her seat and cheered them on like everyone else. She'd already received her own award and given her own speech, she didn't need to hog someone else's moment. |
