I also worry about using that senate seat.

I wonder about this too. So much of any election is about intangibles. Which of these candidates is most likely to generate genuine excitement? We’re not just picking a VP for now—this is also about grooming a future presidential candidate.

I don’t see this as grooming future. Nelwsome, Shapiro & Whitmer are the future.

Kelly seem like a no brainer.

Navy captain, combat pilot, astronaut and senator.
Temperament and personality appeal in the swing states.
His wife is former Rep. Gabby Giffords, a gun violence survivor (and Jewish). Which is a +2 for swing voters in the swing states.
Comes with his own body double which shoud spawn all sorts of fun conspiracy theories.
Arizona has a Dem Governor so it won't mess up the Senate if Tester and Brown get re-elected.

His main downside is that he's boring. But this is 2024 and the opponent is a narcissistic publicity hound. Boring is a virtue

Did I mention that he's a freaking astronaut?

Kelly has a great resume, no doubt about it. Is there a risk that he would take attention away from Harris? You don’t want the VP to outshine the person at the top of the ticket.

Kelly won’t outshine Harris. He’s boring AF. If we’re going with a boring old white guy go with Cooper. Much stronger in governing.

He would outshine her.

Maybe to white men, which would be good. She needs to draw them in and be inclusive.

Mitch Landrieu would be a good pick in that vein.

Mitch is a crook and a charlatan. Thank God, he’s not in the running.

My sense is that they’re waiting for Biden’s speech (today?) about dropping out before they announce a VP.

The vetting should not have begun on Monday since rumors have been swirling at least since the debate, so the vetting shouldn’t be the time-consuming issue here. If the vetting *did* only begin within the past few days, that’s concerning.

It’s also possible they’re having a hard time getting someone to say yes.

If diversity is inclusivity then yes. I think it is important that this ticket start to draw white men back into the Dem fold.

Apparently NC has a law that whenever Cooper leaves the state, his wackjob Lieutenant becomes acting governor. This would create some complications whenever he hits the campaign trail.
And while Arizona does have a Dem governor, if Kelly leaves his seat there would be a special election in 2026 (otherwise Kelly would be up for re-election in 2028). And an appointed senator would not be nearly as strong a candidate as Kelly himself.
So this is why I think it will be either Beshear or Shapiro.

Maybe it's important in general to draw white men back into the Dem fold? Maybe?

When did we leave? I will be voting the same way in 2024 that I did in 2016 and 2020: against the orange criminal.

There are plenty of good candidates parading around screaming choose me. These things take time they have to be properly vetted.

I doubt they’ll make any announcement for the next week.

Shapiro is a hard no due to his stance on Gaza. Secure PA, lose MI. Plus if I were PA resident Id be pissed he jumped ship after 2 years.

I think picking someone from NC or AZ would be foolish because I find it a massive stretch to think those are winnable for Harris. She has polled even worse than Biden in AZ and Biden has been polling horribly there.

She needs to pick someone well liked from Pennsylvania or Michigan or Wisconsin. Those are must wins if Georgia and Arizona are going back to red this year. Which I believe they will.

She could pick Whitmer but I think that’s a bit risky. Shapiro would be a safer bet.

What clever politician would give up a current gig as senator or governor to be Kamala’s sidekick in a doomed campaign?

I don’t think she will win, but she increases her odds if she picks someone popular from a state that is a must-win. Like Shapiro.

But the left wing Dems are pissed about Israel's attacks in Gaza. Shapiro would make the ticket too Jewish, don't you think?

I worry about that, too. He has been quite vocal in his support of Israel, which I respect, he’s Jewish, but which will alienate a chunk of the base, particularly the college/young adult voters who’ve been demonstrating for Gaza/Palestine. It would be better to sidestep that deep rift in the party.

Shapiro being Jewish is a problem, unfortunately. I think she should not pick him.

She shouldn't be making any decisions based on college voters.

Not college, the state of Michigan.

Astronauts are pretty heavily vetted. There's no need to overthink this. But there's also no need to announce anything early. Let the press continue to speculate.

Who is parading and screaming and also a smart choice, in your opinion?
