Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Three preliminary maps were shared at this week’s meetings, which reflect very early draft scenarios, based on more than 1,400 feedback form responses and other input. Thanks to the input we have already received, rest assured that the draft maps will be revised based on your questions, concerns, and suggestions, and brought back to the public for further consideration. |

In the original maps (3/4), Crossfield moved to Skyview and Lees Corner stayed at Chantilly. |
This is what I don't understand about the Oakton moms. I live near them, I know a lot of them, and I don't for the life of me understand why they wouldn't want their kids in a community school that is less than 10 minutes from their homes and instead prefer the school that is 20 minutes away with a massive boundary. I mean, I do know, it's mostly because they are snobs, but it's insane. |
| Maybe they should put that western tj magnet at westfield. Clearly they need a pot sweetener to get enough kids out there. |
I actually love this idea. |
The original maps were so much cleaner. The entire reason we are all now in this mess is because of RIO having a tantrum. How long are they going to keep calling the Maps early draft? It is now May, and they are supposed to set the boundaries in June! This could’ve all been done months ago, but we have grown adults behaving like brats. |
This, and the Centreville people have the *exact same* argument as Lees Corner, only they are much further away from Westfield than Lees Corner. There would be no reason to exempt LC and not those Centreville neighborhoods. And then every other area will have the same argument: we are closer to our current school. |
Its solid. Not enough students live nearby to fill the seats. Put a magnet in. TJ West. |
| Certainly makes more sense than Skyview, which is convenient to many areas |

People have to realize we have two separate issues here.
The first is who is going to Skyview. McNair, Coates, Oak Hill, and the majority of Floris are the closest to Skyview, and they were included in all 7 options/scenarios so far. I don’t care what they say about the downward trend, but Coates and McNair experienced tremendous growth, nearly to crisis levels (Coates is at 140%, and McNair had to split into McNair Lower and McNair Upper). So it makes sense to send these kids to a new, closer school. Skyview can still take one (or 1.5) more elementary school. That will be either Fox Mill or Crossfield. All seven scenarios include either Fox Mill or Crossfield or both. The second issue is how to backfill Westfield. As I said, McNair and Coates are huge, and Westfield is going to lose 1,000 kids if McNair, Coates, and Floris get moved, which they almost certainly will. This is actually the bigger issue. When I predicted that Westfield would lose a thousand kids (before FCPS released the numbers), nobody wanted to believe it. Filling a new school is kind of a fun exercise, but backfilling a less popular one isn’t. Chantilly is crowded, so from FCPS’s perspective, it makes sense to move some Chantilly kids to Westfield. Nobody wants to go, but somebody has to. My last comment is that FCPS turned this whole process into a very political exercise. Trying to get community feedback and input is well intentioned, but loud voices tend to prevail. My prediction is the final map will be similar to Scenario 2 with some modification. That would upset the least number of people. |
Wow. Yes. As a Floris parent I don't like the commute to Westfield but it's so much better than TJ. |
Bull Run isn’t as close to Centreville as Lees Corner is to Chantilly. And then who sticks out? Crossfield/Navy to Oakton, who are nowhere close to their desired school. |
The original maps didn't analyze the middle schools and elementary schools. |
But those neighborhoods are MUCH farther from Westfield than Lees Corner. Which fact is more dispositive? |
