Shrevewood elementary, westgate elementary, spring hill elementary and freedom hill elementary

Anybody have kids that attend any of these schools? We are moving to the area and looking at homes zoned to these schools. Wondering if anyone has any experience and can tell me what they think. Kids are going to be in 4th and 5th grades.

Spring hill is a langley pyramid has the best scores but is over crowded and has aging facilities.

Westgate and shreve are primarily marshall pyramids

Westgate has the lowest teacher to student ratio in the McLean area, good scores , is finishing a 14 million dollar renovation with state of the art facilities and outdoor classrooms. It is very diverse with a majority of asians.

Shreve is similar to westgate but is more overcrowded and has old facilities. I believe they have a small aap class setup but it may go away.

Hands down, Spring Hill- it feeds to Langley or McLean depending on location of the hose. Both are AP high schools. Marshall is an IB school and does not have AP classes. If you want IB, you can transfer to Marshall or South Lakes, depending on location of house.

I believe they all have local AAP (OP, it's basically GT if you're not from the area). Spring Hill has the most AAP kids. Westgate and Shrevewood are pretty equal numbers wise, although Shrevewood may have a few more.

PP, where did you hear that Shrevewood's AAP might go away? I've not heard that.

They are all good schools, but they each have a different feel. Spring Hill's scores are the highest because the SES of the students is higher. The others have more diversity (economic and ethnic). You should try to visit each (although the school year is out so that won't be so productive). Also, look online at their PTA websites, school website, etc. to get a feel.

Agree.

Also, Shrevewood and most of Westgate and Freedom Hill feed into Kilmer MS, which is getting overcrowded. Cooper and Longfellow MS are better options.

You need at least 1.6 million to get a decent house in Springhill vs 1 to 1.3 in Westgate or shrevewood. Cooper and langley will also get more crowded as the area expand and mclean students are moved to langley. AP is the same as IB and actually seen by universities as more of an achievement if you take the ib diploma route. All universities except ib and ap the same.

I heard that shrevewoods small aap class is going to be looked at closely because it is seen as a waste of resources when McLean schools are over crowded.

Everything you just wrote is nonsense that no one believes except you.

I think people on here think that's going to happen. I'd be surprised if anyone significant in FCPS even knows about it. That doesn't mean the program will go away. They'd just put some cusp kids in the class.

The only people who'd claim you need $1.6 million to grt "decent" house in the Spring Hill district are those trying to sell people new homes for slightly over a million in the Marshall district. There are plenty of nice houses in the Spring Hill district for less than $1.6 million.

I think we have a different idea of what is a "decent" house. Other ES to consider for the OP are Churchill Road, Franklin Sherman, Chesterbrook, Kent Gardens and Haycock all are excellent commutes to Tyson's.

For what it's worth, PPs. You can get a great house in Westgate or Shrevewood for under 1.3 (and I agree under 1.6 or even 1.3 in Spring Hill). I think that poster is wacked or, you may be right, shilling for some developer.

I just bought a house in the Shrevewood district for half that, so yeah, the previous poster is nuts!

Op here: my kids are definitely not AAP, so I shouldn't need to worry about that, correct?

Hi--Don't want to get completely off topic, but I'm interested in the statement that Shrevewood might be doing away with its LLIV program. Is this conjecture or does the poster have actual knowledge of concrete efforts to end it?

By way of background, I have a son at Shrevewood. I'm optimistic that he'll qualify for LIV services (although what parent in FC *doesn't* think that? ). I'm actually a big supporter of the center approach. I think Shrevewood's LLIV program isn't really justifiable. The school's overcrowded and the class sizes for LLIV are unfairly small. And Lemon Road has capacity. I also think that Lemon Road's center would be the perfect size if all the LLIV students at Westgate and Shrevewood went to Lemon Road's center. I would support ending the LLIV at Shrevewood (and Westgate, although not being a parent there I shouldn't talk) so as to boost the Lemon Road center.
