There are school districts in the south that were open ALL of last year that are now being forced to go virtual. Delta is different.

Francis Collins yesterday:

"This is really a different virus than last year, and everything we learned about COVID a year ago, you got to sort of hit the reset button on now how we need to react to it," Collins said.”

Where is the reset button FCPS???

Reset for what? You want to have another virtual year?

We have to stop comparing to other schools. These schools did have to close last year for times. Do you remember the famous picture last year of a crowded Georgia high school hallway and then they went virtual for a few weeks?

The reality is that in THIS AREA private and catholic schools were open all year even with quarantine or disturbances. And we didn’t open at all which is just ridiculous. We need to be open this year.

Ha, yeah...'reset' is code for "where is our DL-for-all?" The difference is that these schools forced to close down are doing it temporarily to "flatten the curve" or "reset" if you will. They'll be right back in-person in a few weeks. I believe FCPS would behave likewise. I.e., you're not getting "DL-for-all" for the entire next school year.

I have a senior and want her in school unless kids are bleeding from their eyeballs. To me “reset” means updating quarantining protocols and clarifying for parents (with FCHD) when kids will quarantine. Does my asymptomatic + kid have to miss 2 weeks of school? Does a “close contact”? What’s a close contact for a vaxxed kid with masks? Someone at her lunch table? If kids get delta once and are exposed, do we start over? And if so, she’s carrying 5 APs this year. There needs to be a better plan communicated for keeping on top of school work than, “like an ordinary sick day”. It’s very unusual for kids to be out sick for 2 weeks. Is there going to be an asynchronous recording of classes to watch, or ???

You need to tell Brabrand, Ivey, your regional superintendent, and your school board member that they must give families a plan star. The lack of a solid plan is frustrating to everyone.

Because they GAF what parents think? (spoiler alert: nope).

Only if there are a large number of them yelling loudly. Even Jay Matthews acknowledged in WaPo that school leaders try to keep large angry crowds away from school board meetings.

Demanding the plan only works if lots of people do it.

I don’t think anyone wants DL. They just want information on how things will be handled if wide swathes of the school population become sick .

In reality we will probably convert to DL. If wide swathes get sick, what is the option?

Where is the Group Formerly Known as #OpenFCPS, Do a better FCPS, etc.? They would be useful on this it they would quit whining about mask mandates and CRT.

There won't be quarantining. If a student is wearing a mask and/or vaccinated, they're not considered a close contact. This is outlined on their website.

SB isn’t even meeting until after school start. No, it’s not like they help. But an RTS meeting forces Brabrand to prepare a status report, which gives us plebes some insight as to where we are.

This! Hope for the best and plan for the worst. Everyone but psychopaths wants this to work. But if it doesn’t? Then what? FCPS being so awesome at reacting to unforeseen circumstances (/s).

So you're asking them to plan for unforeseen circumstances? Alien abduction? Meteor hitting a school? Pretty sure they can only plan for the foreseen circumstances.

So one kid at the lunch table can take out 6 unvaxxed kids. And likely make an vaxxed 12+ sick, even if quarantine isn’t required.

This is what I love about DCUM. The PP is saying, "and we didn't open at all which is just ridiculous." I don't know which year you're referring to but in fact we were open last year from March on.

I meant we didn’t open at the start of the year. And yes it was pretty ridiculous that we didn’t open for real until March.

Let's not kid ourselves...we weren't open "for real" last year. Hybrid, while better that DL, is a poor substitute for real in-person learning.

We were in person... It was not hybrid, students that chose in person received in person instruction. Students that chose virtual received virtual instruction. Sure there was a handful of schools that could only support two days a week but that was the minority not the majority.

Guess you never heard of “emergency planning.” I hope you aren’t responsible for young children.

Have classes outside, offer KN95 masks to students, create a schedule that allows for more social distancing… we can’t do any of those things if no one makes contingency plans! They will just revert to DL.

Fair enough. 1/3 of a given ES classroom being under delta quarantine or testing + is absolutely possible. So, for that matter was a major continuity of operations issue, especially when we are just outside DC. But, not foreseeable enough to update BB.

They don’t do well reacting to circumstances for which they haven’t bothered to plan. Which seems like almost all circumstances.

I’m a Fed. We know in DC continuity of government is important. We are less nimble than FCPS, but did a good job reacting because THERE WAS A PLAYBOOK FROM THE OBAMA ADMIN THAT TRUMP HAD FORGOTTEN TO DESTROY. Yes, your tax return was delayed. There were hitches. But the critical stuff got done. And the other stuff came back on line quickly.

Now do FCPS.

Most schools could not split the classes like this. The vast majority of FCPS kids were stuck with concurrent last year.

Using concurrent. Raise your hand if you think concurrent worked well.

Yeah, me neither.

Sounds like you're really talking about your needs, and not necessarily the needs of your kids. Calm down.

Who are you to say that someone else's kids don't need school? What a bizarre comment. My kids also NEED school. Real school.

Have LUNCH outside. I remain perplexed as to why my 17.5 year old can’t eat lunch in the stadium unless it’s raining.
